Figures of Speech: Crowning Glory of English Language, Explained From Common Usage and From Poetry
A language is well recognized in Literature by virtue of several important features of grammar. The numbers of words in any language create a niche for a language and in this way the English language occupies a special place in the world of Literature through the beautiful use of numbers of words. Many languages use figures of speech but English is unique because of the most modern usage.
Figures of speech are mostly used by good writers, talented singers, talented singers and gifted singers. We will see, in this article how these native types use this technique to add charm and glory to the language.
But one thing has to be emphasized on that, learning language lessons through exercises is of limited use and only inner quality can give this talent. However, by reading various articles and listening to lectures, one can improve, rather than polish, one’s natural gifts and present their writings in a way that shines.
With these few preliminaries, let me analyze the figure of speech in each of the different writings.
2. What is Word Computing?
Any writer or poet will put his soul into his books and such books, so it will be a pure example of his soul. Your readers have to be consistent with the same length and know the spirit behind the creations. Mere words will not be enough to do this work because words will only represent the body and a deep process is needed to speak and understand the soul. Numbers of words will do this job; The words may not be the same that are needed to convey the meaning but something beyond the meaning to convey the spirit. English is very rich in this process and there are many forms of figures of speech. In this article we will see a few of them. Anyway it is not a complete list and it is left for the readers to read more writers and poetry to learn more and more figures of speech.
It will not be out of place to mention that classical Tamil language is very rich in this process and some examples from Tamil language are also given.
3. Similes and similes:
The most basic numbers of words are analog and analog. There will be no writer or poet without using these two. A simile is a comparison of two things using words like ‘so or like’, which have some aspect in common.
Poets compare women to the moon (cool and beautiful) and men to lions (Heroic and beautiful). Sometimes we compare women to reptiles and men to trees, especially teak. In other words Man is always strong like a teak tree, while a joker hugs a tree because of love. Another analogy that is often used is that, a man because of cruelty in his heart destroys a woman’s life like a jewel kept by a wild animal.
The imagination of poets knows no bounds. They are not satisfied by describing the beloved as the moon, but it is a flawless moon. For the moon there is only one day like a full moon, but for you dear every day is a full moon day (for your beauty never fades) so a poet wrote.
A metaphor differs from a simile in the sense that it does not compare two things but unites them both into one.
“The lion cried that he would achieve freedom” – describing a freedom fighter
The following are some examples of similes and similes.
“I wander like a cloud…”
“Go on like the stars are shining
And twinkle in the Milky Way”
– Both recite the poem ‘Daffodils’ by William Wordsworth.
If life is a journey, travel,
If life is a game, play it,
If life is a challenge, face it,
If life is a fight, win it.
“A Himalayan blunders”, a phrase used by Gandhi.
4. Hyperbole and Litotes:
Hyperbole is a unique quality of Poetry. In ordinary life, lying is a sin, but in poetry, lying is more likely to attract the attention and interest of the readers. It is also exaggerated to a great extent. Even though it is a lie, it will describe the situation well and it is in the greatness of the poet.
Some examples of Hyperbole:
The writer wants to add humor to this article and the following paragraph describing the use of hyperbole will be the purpose.
In India, especially in Tamilnadu, people use hyperboles to please their bosses etc. freely. The following examples will explain this.
The moment a political leader gets some recognition, posters all over the city will praise him
“Let us raise up our leader forever,
Just show your little finger, we will bring the Earth to your feet.
You are our soul, you are our food, you are our life and so on. ”
(In the next election, if the leader wins, the posters will disappear, and new posters praising the winner will appear. After all ‘Nothing is successful like success’.
Another field that gets more love and affection from everyone is film. Lovers will greet matinee idols on their birthdays as follows:
“You look at the sky, He gives you light. When you wake up, when you close your eyes, He will become black.”
The Earth revolves because of it. A lion refuses to roar from your smile, the flowers blossom from your smile” and so on and so forth.
Litotes is just the opposite, which is to degrade something by speaking in a negative way.
For example: “Okay, the picture is not bad” means that the picture is satisfactory.
The man is not a fool means the man is wise. 5 Euphemisms, Dysphemism and Oxymoron.
5. Euphemism is expressing something unsatisfactory in an acceptable way.
“Oh! My boss sleeps there!” meaning that he is dead, and he is buried there.
“I’m going to the Rest room” means I’m going to the toilet etc
Dysphemism is the opposite of Euphemism.
For example: Call a man who has a cure as ‘fellow friend’.
Call freedom fighters ‘terrorists’
The standing boss is classified as the ‘pig’s boss’s partner’.
Oxymoron combines two opposite things to express a common feature.
Father to son: “You are a wise fool. You have a clever way of solving problems.”
“I’m doing voluntary work for nothing”
The king is a benevolent dictator.
“The team is brave”
The UN sent a ‘peace force’ to warring countries.
“Ah, Death, why do you put your finger on all the great people!
Death, will you not accept death one day”, so that others may live- taken from a Tamil poem.
Behold! Pride and Vanity will speak.
“Oh. Mahatma (Gandhi) For this, you have our freedom?”
This is a direct communication with the dead as if they were alive and standing before us.
Sometimes inanimate objects are thought to have life and are challenged.
Oh, India, Is there anyone to save you from this calamity?”
“Oh, Indian cinema, does it have any future”?
Antithesis is saying two things that are completely opposite in a sentence to emphasize a particular point.
The best example of antithesis is ‘; People suggest, God disposes’ which shows that anything is in our hand.
To err is human but to forgive is divine.
Talk is silver but silence is gold.
“It is not that I love Caesar less, but I love Rome more.”
Epigrams are almost proverbial words that correspond to the antithesis, striking a surprise in the minds of the listeners.
Fools run where angels fear to tread.
The man’s father is a child.
Poetry is nothing but a glorious lie.
Marriage is legalized prostitution.
Irony is an important element of poetry and drama. The irony of the circumstances increases the paths in them and shows the talents of the writer or poet. It is a subject for which we can give thousands of examples from poetry, prose, plays and films. In fact you need a series of articles to cover this big topic. However let me attach to show some examples to show the number of this word. (Examples given from his own observations).
I). We have seen in many movies, the son is separated from the father. The irony is that a father will help his son in many difficult situations without realizing that he is helping his own son.
ii) Lovers are separated by fate. When the lover meets his lover after say, five years, it is none other than his stepmother, who has married his father. The irony is added when he or she is shown as blind.
iii) The student picked a fight with the lady. When he arrived at his exam hall, he was surprised to notice that he was none other than his new teacher.
We ask readers to read more poetry and prose and identify the pattern of this word and enjoy the richness of the language.
PUN is saying a word that gives different meanings: Some people are great experts in this way of speaking. It takes a lot of skill to pun on a particular word.
A very famous example of this is “Sir… I’m pregnant three times and still not delivering anything” which is said about a British MP who says, “I’m pregnant, I’m pregnant, I’m pregnant” but doesn’t finish the statement.
A father, on a cloudy day, said, “The sun is not shining, neither is my son” to talk about his son’s bad deeds.
“We ‘made’ you”, a sign board.
How long we last, depends on the ‘liver’.
It means changing the name, through the works we do:
The Bench (Judges) awarded the death penalty.
The Tribune (a three-member committee) resolved the offer.
Crown (King) happy etc.
Teachers (Teachers) have a meeting
13. Glory and anti-glory:
Climax is the dramatic ending of a sentence on a positive note, and with a negative note is an ‘anti-climax’.
He is intelligent, hard working, intellectual, professional and truly a ‘genius’.
He is my Friend, Philosopher and Guide and in short, he is my God.
She is very beautiful. beautiful, beautiful and none other than Venus who has come to Earth.
These are few examples of Climax.
Examples of adverbs are:
He is rich like God, he has all the gold and money, and he does not give any paisa to the poor.
He buys kilos of food, drinks and fruit but can’t eat even one on doctor’s advice (also an example of Irony)
He was a great football player, represented the college team in dozens of games and never scored a goal.
Water everywhere, not too much to drink.
These are a few very simple examples of figures of speech reproduced from personal observations and some, from known examples. This is just the tip of the iceberg (not a hyperbole). Actually, this is a very large area of any language that requires in-depth study. But the custom with most of the students is to skip this chapter which is usually at the fag end of the grammar classes which seems to be too vague to learn. This article can help in creating an orientation to this aspect of learning. If readers are motivated to learn more about the numbers of words, the purpose of this article is satisfactory.
I greet all the readers of GOD.
