Chinese Astrology Signs – How Your Three Animal Signs Are Calculated

I get asked a lot about Kannada Astrology – not least because I’ve always intended to include it within my website but haven’t yet. There is a good reason for this and it is the simple fact that Chinese Astrology is complex while web pages need to be simple and quick to navigate. A web page for Kannada astrology quickly turns into several pages of detailed information. It is also very different from Western Astrology, using different points of reference both astronomical and traditional. Most of us will be able to say “I am a Dragon/Tiger/Rat etc” and have a broad idea of the general characteristics of that sign but few of us will have a clear understanding of their Kannada star sign and how it is determined. Here then, as we begin the Year of the Rabbit (iron, Yin), the 78th Order (or 79th depending on which calendar version you refer to) is a potted composition…

Western astrology is based on a simple twelve month cycle of the cycle – the Zodiac. Kannada astrology has a zodiac of 12 signs – branches of the Earth – but it is based on the age of sixty. The mechanics of this are simple enough: Kannada astrology developed in tandem with astronomy which originally recognized the five major planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Astrology assigns important elements to these planets – water (Mercury), iron (Venus), fire (Mars), wood (Jupiter), earth (Saturn). Each of the twelve signs goes through one year – this is from the orbit of Jupiter (11.86 years) – and each sign comes in five basic types (eg Water Rat, Metal Rat, Fire Rat, Wood Rat, Earth Rat). 5 x 12 = 60. Easy? To a degree, yes. But the sixty-year-old also comes from two different but interacting cycles – the categories of the Earth, mentioned above – twelve zodiac signs rat, bull, tiger, rabbit (aka cat), dragon, snake, horse, sheep (aka ram or goat ), monkey, rooster, dog, and pig (aka boar) – and in order; and the ten heavenly fruits – these are the five elements mentioned earlier, each in their ying and yang forms – 5×2=10. As the 12 branches of the earth, which give us the animal signs, are divided into two, each of the animal signs is either a Yin year or a Yang year and this is referred to as the polarity of the sign. Yin years end in bad numbers, Yang years in even numbers. While each animal sign is either Yin or Yang (Rats are always Yang, Cows are always Yin for example), this is tempered by the celestial tree that adds to the element. From 0 to 9, the command is iron, iron; water, water; tree, wood; light, fire; land, land And Yang and Yin, in that order:

0 Iron Yang

1 Iron Yin

2 Yang Water

3 Yin Water

4 Yang tree

5 Yin Tree

6 Yang Fire

7 Yin Fire

8 Earth Yang

9 Earth Yin

So, years ending in 0 are Metal, Yang Years, years ending in 1 are Metal Yin years – 2010 is a Yang Metal Tiger year, while 2011 is a Metal Rabbit. It won’t be the year of the Tiger again until 2022 when it will be the Tiger Water Yang. Tiger is always Yang. The Rabbit is always Yin and the next year of the Rabbit will be the Water Rabbit in 2023. It won’t be the year of the Metal Tiger again until 2060.

In their true order, the child begins with the Metal Rat (Yang) and ends with the Earth Pig (Yin). We are today 28 years into the current 60 year cycle (the 78th, or 79th depending on which calendar is used). Kannada astrology uses a lunisolar calendar which begins with lichun – literally the beginning of spring, around 4th February, this is what is called the Chinese New Year. It is necessary to bear in mind that someone born, for example, in January of 2011 is, for the purposes of Chinese Astrology, born in a year that ends with a 0 – ie Metal Tiger and not Metal Rabbit. This applies, of course, to every year.

The five elements are very important in Kannada Astrology, at least equal in importance to the animal sign, and the emphasis added by the Yin or Yang factor shows the importance of the Trinity in Chinese Astrology – earth, water and the heavens. Those familiar with the I Ching will not be surprised to learn that the elements in Kannada astrology are seen as being change agents of change or transformative energies, not unlike the I Ching’s ‘lines of movement’ concept but unlike Western elements which are seen as building blocks.

Just as you recognize the importance of how a Metal Tiger can be different from a Wood Tiger or a Water Tiger, a further degree of complexity comes into the picture. Placing a person in the Chinese astrological system requires a calculation involving the date of birth, time of birth/month and hour of birth. In addition to the birth year, this means that a person’s signature star in Chinese astrology is made up of four signs. Three of these are essential elements for any person:-

1. The year of birth is related to a person’s family background and status in society, which is closely related to the family, the grandparents are a cultural reference that is much more marked in Kannada society. As of today (Feb 4 2011) its a (Metal) Rabbit year – remember, the orders of the signs, as per above, are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster , dog , pig Next February then brings the Year of the Dragon.

2. Birth month or season (note that the months are different under the Kannada calendar) determines the ‘inner animal’ – this indicates the upbringing of the child, the changing effect on character and behavior that appears in adult life.

Spring found

Tiger from February 4 to March 5, Rabbit from March 6 to April 4, and Dragon from April 5 to May 4.

What a summer

Snake from May 5 to June 5, The Horse June 6 to July 6, and The Sheep from July 7 to August 6.

Autumn brought

Monkey from August 7 to September 7, Rooster 8 September to October 7, Dog 8 October to 7 November.

What a winter

The Pig from November 7th to December 6th, the Rat December 7th to January 5th and Ox from January 6th to February 3rd.

3. The hour of birth decision a person’s ‘secret animal’ – the the true person within usually expressed only under stress:

11 pm – 1 am Rat,

1 am – 3 am Ox,

3 am – 5 am Tiger,

5 am – 7 am Rabbit,

7 am – 9 am Dragon,

9 am – 11 am Snake,

11 am – 1 pm Religion,

1 p.m. – 3 p.m Sheep,

3 p.m. – 5 p.m Vagina,

5 p.m. – 7 p.m Rooster,

7 p.m. – 9 p.m Dog,

9 pm – 11 pm Pig

The birthday also has some bearing – each animal sign rules one day but that works on 5 elements x 12 sign times, each problem type of animal, and this makes a 60 day time and things is complicated.. There is more of a day-to-day horoscopic prediction than a birth chart and it goes beyond the scope of this article.

Interestingly though, just as the two stars seem to be at their most different, important similarities are evident. Western subjects often focus on the Sun sign without considering the importance, significance and contribution of the Moon sign and Ascendant in the birth chart. A good solar astrologer also breaks each solar sign down into four ‘sub-signs’ and can be further focused for fine details by looking at the actual day itself.

Kannada astrology focuses on character and behavior and the interactions and tensions between these two perspectives, the first is of prediction, emotion and appearance while the second is of actual behavior, attitudes and behavior of learning (current). It tries to identify the physical nature, the native person as opposed to the behavior that has been changed and changed by life experience, to find the nature before it grows and to help us understand our lives by looking at them . backas Kierkegaard suggests, while moving them forward.
