The Pet Monkey Advertisement

No ten-year-old in the late 1950s got more comic books than Ronny the Chimp. The truth is that when he bought a comic book using his allowance money Ronny got some interest in the comic book stories. You just want to find the advertisement section which displays many advertisements selling gags, entertainment and magic tricks. Ronny has almost all of them and plays pranks on his friends at school. But in the latest issue Ronny’s interest is piqued when he sees a new ad for a small pet monkey:

“Darling Squirrel Monkey” who “makes an excellent pet and companion. Almost human with a warm face, your family will love you. These young monkeys will grow to about 12 inches tall. Eat the same foods like you, too like lollipops: easy to care for and train. Live delivery guaranteed only $18.95. Three checks or money orders to: farm animals Dept. K26, Box 1042, 39 Miami Beach, Florida.”

Ronny ran in to tell his mother and showed her the ad.

“Oh, don’t fall for more cheesy gags” his mother warned.

“But Mom, it can’t be a gag. This could be a pet!”

Ronny thought sadly, then hung his head, and slowly walked back to his room and closed his door. Several minutes later, the woman gently knocked on the door and quietly opened it. Ronny was pouting on his bed. He sat down next to her and said, “Okay, we’ll ask your dad when he gets home from work tonight.”

Ronny stood up straight and ran around his room. “Wait. Ronny! Don’t be so sad. Your father can say ‘No’.”

When his father arrived home several hours later, Ronny ran to him and showed him the ad. “Can I have a monkey, please?” His father examined the ad as Ronny anxiously awaited the verdict.

“What in the world would you do with a little monkey?… A dog or a cat?”

“I want a monkey! Please, Father… Please??”

“I will have to think about it. If you still want this monkey in 10 days, I will consider buying it for you. But, please think carefully about it before then.”

Convinced that he would marry again in 10 days, Ronny ran around the house, then into his room where he collapsed and fell asleep. The next day at school, he told his friends that he was going to get a monkey. They all laughed at him because they had seen the same ad, but they thought it was a scam. The others remembered all the practical jokes Ronny bought from comic book ads, and bet he would get the little monkey.

Anyway, Ronny counted the days until his father agreed to fill a check for $18.95.

“Are you sure this is what you want, son?”

“You betcha!”

“Well, let me have the ad and I’ll send him a check in the mail. But I want you to promise to take care of it yourself!”

“I will, Father! I will.”

Ronny’s father sent the order. A week passed, then two weeks. Ronny became concerned after six months of rolling about. Years come and go and still no monkey. Ronny simply forgot about what he could have owned. In the meantime, life goes on for Ronny. She went to high school, graduated from high school, got married, and had children. “Ronny” became “Ronald.” His folks live in a retirement home, while he and his family live in the same house he grew up in.

One Saturday, in 1982, Ronny was playing with his 12-year-old son Tyler when a UPS truck pulled up in front of his old house. The UPS driver walked up to Ronny and said, “I’ve got a delivery for Ronny Chimp.”

“That’s me, but no one has called me ‘Ronny’ in years. People call me ‘Ronald’.” The driver tells him that he has an important delivery from NASA.

The driver looked at the back of his seat and a little something like “Eeeeekk!…Eeeek!” came from the box.

He inspected the box and found rather large punched holes.

“It’s some animal. Do you order an animal?”

“Of course not…”

He heard voices coming from the box. As Ronald ran to open the box, he quickly tore it open. Below is a cage with a small squirrel monkey in it.

Ronald’s mouth was open and there was a surprised look on his face – “a squirrel monkey???” His mind suddenly returned to his childhood when he saw an advertisement for a squirrel monkey.

“I sent for this monkey in the 1950s when I was 10 years old!!… What in the world?!” The animal started jumping up and down and screamed loudly. Then, his family came out to see what the fuss was about. Ronald looked at the basket and saw an envelope that was folded in the basket’s mouth. He tore it open and began to read a letter:

From the National Space Aerodynamic Administration

To Whom This May Concern,

If you have received this Squirrel Monkey that we at NASA call “Miss Baker”, it is because you may have purchased one of these monkeys in the past. We’re sorry you didn’t get your pet, but now, we give you Miss Baker was bought with 25 other monkeys at a pet store in Miami, Florida, and brought to the Naval Aviation Medical School in Pensacola. She is getting older and needs a new home. He started working for us in 1959 and became our first flight monkey. We were sent into space for 16 minutes and successfully returned in perfect health. No physical or mental abnormalities were found with him. He is not just a story monkey, he has developed knowledge and abilities. I have included photos of him while he was with us at NASA.

We will miss you, and we hope you are taking good care of you!

JL Flights, NASA Director of Astrophysics

The animal’s body is mostly brown. On her pink face are two black eyes, a small nose, and a black mouth. He stood about a foot tall, and weighed about one and a half pounds. Ronald gave “Miss Baker” a smile, but she and all her family seemed surprised. Ronald’s little daughter, Tina was afraid to take her out, but Miss Baker immediately jumped up from the cage, to Tina and hugged her. After that, he quickly flew to the ground, screaming at the same time. It is clear that Tina is the monkey’s favorite member of the family, probably because she can relate to Tina because she is small. After only a few weeks, the family thought of Miss Baker as part of the family.

Ronald reflects on his childhood when he wanted a pet squirrel and was not accepted. It seemed miraculous in a way that the precious animal that his father had paid for so long ago finally arrived at his home. Seeing the little monkey playing with his daughter, making him very happy made him wait a long time.
