Zambia Bird Watching & Game Viewing Treat

Travel Tips for Bird Lovers & Safari Seekers!

Zambia has it all: amazing wildlife, stunning scenery, and is home to some of the most popular resorts in the entire world! From the unique and splendid Victoria Falls, to some of the best safari holidays like South Luangwa National Park, Lake Kariba and Kafue; by choosing this trip you are sure about to embark on an adventure to be cherished for the rest of your life!

With an estimated 740 bird species, the country is simply a Garden of Eden for bird lovers! The great combination of miombo woodland, grass dambos, forests and wetlands is the best land, which guarantees the best breeding opportunities all year round. In fact, Zambia is believed to have one of the highest bird-rich concentrations on the African continent!

On this 11 day Safari and Bird Watching Extraordinaire Combo you will travel across the country and have the opportunity to encounter a rich variety of wildlife. Expect to see lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, red lechwe…and so much more!

Are you ready for the time of your life?! Zambia here we are…

Date by Site Guide:

Day 1: Arrival at Lusaka International and transfer to Chaminuka Game Reserve Lodge, outside the city. After a delicious light lunch, you have a choice between two activities: an afternoon around the reserve (which offers game drives, forest tours and horse safaris), OR a trip to the Zoo Crocodile kalimba. Either way, expect to see many birds and wildlife (Chaminuka has more than 300 species of birds), or large numbers of hungry crocs! 🙂

Day 2: Breakfast in Chaminuka and drive to Lower Zambezi National Park, opposite the famous Mana Pools Reserve in Zimbabwe. Stay at Sausage Tree Camp & canoeing in the afternoon. Amazing photo opportunities for birds, and exciting close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and other thirsty riverside animals! Birds of interest: Hornbill Trumpeter, parrot Meyer, lovebird Lilian and Narina Trogon!

Day 3: Early game drive and transfer to the shores of Lake Kariba. Afternoon Sundowner farm around the lake, drinks and light snacks included. Night at Spurwing Island (Zimbabwe). Must See Birds: Spurwing Geese of course, majestic Fish-Eagle, African Darter, and Gymnogene (African Harrier-Hawk). Also be on the lookout for the many wild animals of the area where elephants, masses of hippos, crocs, buffalo and waterbuck are king!

Day 4: Morning game drive in the Matusadona National Park, and the continuation of the journey to the south to reach the “Flowing Smoke”: Victoria Falls, one of the greatest natural wonders in the world! Visit of the falls and accommodation at The Royal Livingstone Hotel (5 Star British Old Style; been there, simply extraordinary), known as the “grand old lady of the Falls!” An impressive view of Vic Falls, and a private trail only 10 minutes from the sky. Make sure you have your raincoats ready as it can be a “cold” experience! 😉

Day 5: Wake up at 6am for a short visit to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, best for rhino sightings. After a typical “bacon and eggs” breakfast you will head to Zambia’s oldest and largest national park: Kafue! It’s truly a bird-watching paradise, with approximately 481 species ranging from waterfowl to land specimens.

Accommodation at Hippo Lodge, in thatched chalets or rustic safari tents overlooking the Kafue River. Spectacular game viewing in the Busanga plain, which flourishes with red lechwe, puku, solitary and rare sitatunga, roan and sable antelope, zebra and dozens of other fascinating animals. Cat species such as lions and cheetahs are also very common! Interesting Bird Species: Endangered wattled crane, Fulleborn’s long coat, African finfoot, Pels fishing owl, Bohms bee eater and half-collared kingfisher.

Day 6: Full day inside Kafue National Park. Birding safari and river cruise are included in the programs. Game drives and walking safaris are also possible. Fancy a rejuvenating hot spring dip in a unique sand bottomed Jacuzzi? Anything is possible at Hippo Lodge! Your love is our command!!!

Day 7: Game drive until 9 am, breakfast at Hippo Lodge and departure for Lochinvar National Park. Lochinvar has excellent birding prospects, with over 420 bird species recorded in just over 428 square kilometres! That’s almost one kind of bird per square kilometer!

Overnight at The Lechwe plains tent. Highlights of the trip include the unique makoro (canoe dugout) outing, the search for Kafue lechwe and sitatungas! Watch Birds: Pink-backed and white pelicans, African skimmer, Baillon’s crake, osprey, secretary bird, etc.

Day 8: Early departure by charter flight to Bangweulu Swamps in the northern region of the country! The area is home to the endemic Black lechwe and is one of the last refuges of the amazing Shoebill, a large bird-like bird. Your stop for the night will be Shoebill Island Camp, which offers a panoramic view of the flood!

Day 9, 10 & 11: Last but not least, our destination will take you to my favorite Zambian safari destination: South Luangwa National Park! In fact, many experts regard it as one of the top wildlife sanctuaries in the world!

Accommodation at luxurious Mfuwe Lodge! Each chalet has its own en-suite bathroom, and a beautiful deck overlooking one of the pools. The lodge also has an open boma for special dinner nights, and a camping area for late and cool evening chats under the starry African skies!

Common birds of the area: yellow and saddle birds, open storks, black-headed herons, ground horns, hammerkops and carmine bee-eaters!

Activities:

– On arrival: Light lunch, afternoon nap and night game drive. The Luangwa Valley is well known for its spectacular and busy wildlife after dark. Keep your eyes open for unusual species such as African civets, guineas, porcupines and jungles! Also interesting are the feeding hippos, hyenas and leopards (good environment for dangerous cats)!

– Day 10: Early game drive, heavy breakfast and safari walking around the lodge area. A second night drive is encouraged, although it is really up to you!

– Day 11: Packing and heading for Lusaka International Airport!
