The Top Ten Most Popular Prehistoric Animals of 2010
At this time of year, there are a number of charts published. They cover a wide range of topics, from the mundane such as the most popular type of burger to serve at a famous international burger chain to the more interesting ones such as the list of the most searched words on the internet, celebrities, CD most of all. sell, the most successful movie of the year and so on. We have Everything Dinosaur, has for many years, kept an account of extinct animals that students and children we have met have asked about. We have recorded a number of emails about previous animals we have adopted. We have generated statistics about the visits to our web pages and conducted our own research to build a picture of what long dead creatures are “hot” and which are not.
During the period between Christmas and New Year we gather all the material from various research sources and then we publish a list of the ten most famous prehistoric animals. There are only two requirements that an animal has to meet in order to be considered for our list. First, the animal must be destroyed, the existing species are not allowed. Secondly, animals and imaginary creatures are not allowed. For example, when the Harry Potter movie “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” came out back in 2007, we met many students on our educational trips and school visits who wanted us to talk about this historical creation. Unfortunately, Phoenix as an imaginary animal cannot be in our top ten list.
Based on our research, in reverse order here are numbers ten down to number six on our list of the most famous prehistoric animals compiled by Everything Dinosaur for 2010.
10). Liopleurodon (a giant sea monster)
This giant Jurassic monster makes an appearance in our top ten list for the first time. The popularity of Liopleurodon is down to the number of repetitions of the television series “Walking with Dinosaurs” in which another giant creature was featured, including its inclusion in the computer generated images of the “Dinosaurs Live” tour.
9). Saber-toothed cat (Smilodon)
A perennial favorite and regular in our top ten surveys. This prehistoric vegetable is very popular especially with the young children studied. The “Ice Age” movies have helped maintain the popularity of this terrifying carnivore. A large amount of Saber-Tooth Tiger merchandise and toys Sabre-Tooth Tiger has definitely maintained an animal in our top ten.
8). Brachiosaurus (long-necked dinosaur)
The first dinosaur listed was a large, but peaceful plant eater. A number of new models of Brachiosaurus have been launched this year, especially by Carnegie Safari of America and Collecta. The introduction of new hand-painted creations and subsequent sales have catapulted this goliath into our top ten.
7). Diplodocus (long-tailed dinosaur)
Ahead, perhaps through the sky, Diplodocus is another huge dinosaur. Like Brachiosaurus, Diplodocus was a sauropod, but it was more easily built with a long neck and tail. This peaceful, plant-eating Jurassic proved to be very popular among the schoolgirls we met in 2010. We also received a number of email inquiries about this particular dinosaur. This helped increase the number of mentions Diplodocus had and thus ended up in our top ten.
6). Pteranodon (flying monster – Pterosaur)
Going into position number six on our top ten list is the Pteranodon. We ask for many drawing materials for flying creatures (Pterosaurs) and Pteranodon is the most famous. We thought that the presentation of a model of a long-legged Pterosaur – Rhamphorhynchus by Safari could affect the popularity of Pteranodon, but no, the large creature of the Cretaceous flying reptile is the most famous of its kind.
So this is the first part of our top ten list of the most famous prehistoric animals completed. It includes two dinosaurs and three non-dinosaurs (Pteranodon, Smilodon and Liopleurodon). The animals on this list live millions of years apart, but they have all proven to be very popular with the children we meet on our travels, museum work, school visits and the like. last twelve months,
Let the count continue, from five down to the first number.
5). Stegosaurus (armored dinosaur)
A real favorite among scientists and researchers and the kind of dinosaur we love to work on ourselves. Stegosaurus made the top five and proved to be the most popular prehistoric animal with all the girls who helped us with our research. Stegosaurus is number one as far as they are concerned, but in our general list it is a reliable number five.
4). Woolly Mammoth
Dividing our top five dinosaur order, our Woolly Mammoth (The first mammoth) to give this species its scientific name. Thanks to “Manny” of the “Ice Age” trilogy Woolly Mammoths have gone from strength to strength in terms of popularity in the last two years. The Chicago Field Museum’s traveling exhibits will help keep this animal on our top ten list for years to come.
3). Velociraptor (Terrible Dinosaur)
The villain from the “Jurassic Park” movies continues to ride high on our chart. A large number of Velociraptor models, toys and products have helped to maintain this small Theropod’s position in the top ten. It proves to be very popular with young boys, who seem to have a preference for more bloodthirsty dinosaurs.
2). Triceratops (three-faced)
The horned dinosaur, otherwise known as the three-horned dinosaur is this year’s runner-up on our chart of the most famous prehistoric animals. Popular with boys and girls, this dinosaur has benefited from a number of press articles related to horned dinosaurs (Ceratopsians) covered. Triceratops holds onto the runner-up position.
Before we present the first number, the most famous prehistoric animal of 2010 according to our own research, it would be appropriate to mention at this point some animals that are not listed much this year. Spinosaurus, Ankylosaurus and Apatosaurus are dinosaurs that just disappeared. Special mention to the flying creature Rhamphorhynchus and the almost aquatic creature Ichthyosaurus.
However, the most popular prehistoric animal of the last year, based on our research, homework, dinosaur quizzes etc. is…
1). Tyrannosaurus rex (King of the lizards)
No surprise, the most famous prehistoric animal is the T. rex. Perhaps one of the most famous of all creatures to have ever existed on earth, this large, carnivorous, known from a handful of articulated specimens and many ongoing fossil discoveries to dominate. “King of the Comic Lizards” was our number one, by a considerable margin. Doubts may have arisen about the T. rex being the largest carnivore of all time, but it remains firmly at the top of our annual survey.
