Everything You Need to Know About the Goldendoodle!
Dogs today are very much a part of a family system. They always make us enjoy ourselves, they always smile, they are good friends to our children, they are there for us to talk to us when we are alone and have no one else! They love us unconditionally and bring so much joy and love into a family. There is no question in my mind that since the beginning of time dogs have been known as mans best friend!
Goldendoodles are no exception. A golden doodle is a mix between a golden retriever and a poodle. Breeders in Australia began breeding this cross in the mid-1980s and breeders in North America have been breeding them since the mid-1990s. They where first served in Australia as a guide dog for people needing a large, allergy friendly dog!
Goldendoodles are wonderful, healthy, family dogs for many reasons!
First of all, every mix between a poodle and a retriever will give the doodle a quality known as “hybrid power” (children of genetically different parents) which means that mixed breed dogs are always healthy and live longer than their offspring. holy. This is because many genetic markers are recessive. Golden’s and poodles do not have many diseases in common so if both parents do not carry a specific trait for a disease the puppies cannot get it. This is why many mixed breed dogs with the goldendoodle are healthier then purebreds. You also have to choose your breeder carefully and make sure that they are doing all the necessary health tests, temperature testing and checking the lines properly before they breed their dogs but in general mixed breeds are more genes!
Goldendoodles also have many qualities of poodles and goldens. Most golddoodles are friendly, highly intelligent, gentle dogs that love to be part of the family. They love to swim, play and interact with people. They are very social dogs and love to work and have fun. I have donated dogs as therapy and service dogs and doodle excels at this type of work! As a breeder I hear 100’s of stories about how smart these dogs are and how they are at the top of their puppy class and how they are the best dogs my clients have ever owned.
Most doodles have very little to no shedding coat. This depends on the dog and the type of clothing they have. There are 3 different types of coats, wool (which is the thickest pile and most hypoallergenic), wool (which is wavy and usually much less and hypoallergenic) and wool (which is straight and usually the most sold) ). An experienced vet can often tell when puppies are 6-7 weeks old what type of coat they will have as adults and the breed will help you find the right puppy for your needs. Goldendoodles’ coat will continue to grow and can be between 3-8 inches if not trimmed. Doodles need regular brushing or they will mate and should go to the groomer for a clip every 4 months or so!
Goldendoodles also come in many colors and sizes depending on the poodle used. In our house we breed blonde, golden, apricot, red, black, silver and phantom doodles. We also have 3 different sizes, standards (anything over 21″ and 50lbs and up), mini’s (13″ to 20″ and 25-49lbs) and tiny’s (12″ or less 10-24lbs ).
Their life expectancy is usually 12-15 years for the standards and 14-17 years for the minis.
Doodles also come in many different generations and depending on what you are looking for one generation may be better than the other. F1’s are white gold mixed with a white poodle. This generation is always the healthiest and has the greatest amount of “hybrid energy” signs. F1b is a cross and is of a goldudoodle bred back to a poodle. These types of golddoodles are usually better for people with allergies because f1b usually has a curlier coat then f1 (please note this is not always the case and your breeder will be able to help you with this) . F2 is a golddoodle breed that goes back to a golddoodle. Pups in litters of f2 tend not to do much in one direction or another. They seem to be a good mix between both golden and poodle (sometimes but not always in an f1 litter some puppies will turn more towards a golden, more towards a poodle and some will be in between), f3 (f3 and higher is also known as multi generation) is and f2 gold doodle back to f2 gold doodle and f4 is a f3 back doodle to f3 gold doodle. The more you breed them to each other the more you lose on hybrid power. A 7th generation (f7) goldendoodle is eligible for registration as a purebred (this has not been done as far as I know).
As I mentioned before golddoodles are healthier then many purebred dogs but breeders should also do all the tests on the parents. It is better to wait for a puppy with good potential from a great breeder then to support careless breeders who are just out to breed as many puppies as possible without caring about the breed as a whole.
If you buy your golden doodle puppy from a non-reproducible breeder you may end up with many health problems and expensive vet bills.
