How to Draw: 6 Tips on Framing Pencil Drawings

It’s how your finished artwork is presented that makes all the difference. Although it is tempting to simply place your drawing in a ready-made frame, there are several things that you should consider before producing your artwork to ensure that it is protected over the years.

Use acid-free products
Any matting, tape or adhesive, barriers, or support you use in turning your picture or drawing should be absolutely acid free. Acidic materials, after long periods of time can damage the artwork in the frame by changing the actual paper or by turning the paper yellow.

Use matting
I like to use mats with the frames of my drawings.

If acidic matting is used, it should be backed by an acid-free material that will act as a protective barrier between the matting and the drawing. There is a standard thickness that is important and preferred in the industry for storage or containment. The same consideration should be given to the support of your drawing. If your drawing or image is supported or placed on an acid-free material, prevention is not necessary. Some frames use a foam-core board for support.

Stay away from the dark
As a general rule, I always stick to black, especially solid black—although, it can work if it’s part of a color scheme with a certain sheen and if it doesn’t overpower the drawing. It’s good to have something that has multiple values-with handles and mats, work as a set. Even with the values and gradations created within the graphite media, the mat or mats and the frame can all be chosen to either compliment, subdue, or emphasize a specific value or aspect of your drawing.

Always frame with glass
I will always frame with glass, but I will also spend extra money for UV protection glass. However, I would not use non-glare glass or plexiglas.

The drawing should be thoroughly cleaned, removing smudges, dust, or eraser fragments. To see if there are any small fragments on your paper or drawing, you should look closely from a strong angle, so that you can see them in contrast to the surface of the paper as they arise. You can use a brush or compressed air to remove debris from the deposited material.

Glass should be exceptionally clean and should be tested for fingerprints, dust, hair, or other foreign materials, before it is completely secured in the frame. You may have to do this more than once.

Let your artwork breathe
When attaching a drawing to the back or anything that secures its position between the mats or the frame, it should only be secured at the top and allowed to hang if you use adhesive or tape. It should not be secured firmly at all four corners or around its perimeter, because the humidity is constantly changing and the paper has to be free to flex, expand, and contract. However, the paper will sell or develop waves if it is restricted in any way. These waves in the paper are most visible when the light is directed or at an angle to the object being photographed. Light causes highlights and shadows because of the pages in the book. Some frames are using a large plastic photo corner that allows the paper to slide in and be secured in all four corners and still allow for the flexing of the paper. It seems to work well, as many of my drawings and illustrations using other media on paper, have been designed in this way for several years.

Add a protective dust cover
After you attach the pictures and accessories to the actual frame, you should use a dust cover on the back to keep additional dust, spiders, or bugs from entering the framed picture. This is usually done by using double-sided tape on the back of the movement all the way around the area. Then a brown paper is placed on the adhesive surface as it stretches flat as it presses on the adhesive surface. Then trim the outside edges of the brown paper to match and then you’re ready to attach your chicken wire, before placing your artwork on display!

Have fun drawing!
