Adaption of Animals to the New Environment

Animals such as Rothschild giraffes, impalas, Dofassa Waterbuck and Bushback have been introduced to the national park Mt. Elgon.

Visitors who last visited Mt.Elgon park three years ago will be amazed at the variety of animals that are there today. A game drive across the 196 square-kilometer park located west of Uganda in the Trans-Nzoia region reveals the renovated park.

Until recently, people went to the park to see the cave elephants and about 340 species. Other common animals in the area are the leopard, giant hog, bushbuck, buffalo, duicker, black Columbus monkeys. and white, blue monkeys and golden cats.

According to researchers at the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the population of the newly introduced species will increase, with research studies showing that the animals have adapted to their new habitat. Recent reports of large mammal monitoring in the park show that the animals are reproducing.

In March 2007, 15 giraffes were taken from Nai’s Nakuru farm. Twenty-two impalas are also being transported from the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary and Lake Nakuru National Park.

“The impalas have been acclimatized, are healthy and have been buried. However, their number needs to be raised to make the population ecologically viable,” said KWS.

According to the researchers, all the introduced species spend the morning and afternoon periods feeding. The giraffes have established their niche and are good feeders thanks to the presence of vegetation. Zebras concentrate on highways where grazing is plentiful. They also prefer grasslands and forests under development.

Zebras’ mobile lips allow them to graze on both soft and hard grass, and they graze in one area until it dwindles before moving on to the next. Lions, hyenas, wild dogs and cheetahs are their main predators.

The number of visitors to Mount Elgon national park has increased due to the new biodiversity.
