How Can I Be Sure I Am Going to Heaven When I Die?
One of Jesus’ disciples named Thomas asked the same question and it was written down for us in the Gospel of John (chapter 14 vs. 5 and 6). Thomas said to him (Jesus), “Lord, we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. From this statement, Jesus said an important thing. He declared that he is the only way to the Father, which refers to entering Heaven where the Father lives.
For centuries, mankind has been in fear of death and what comes after. To try and overcome the fear of death people have created religions, gods, goddesses, and some kind of religious system that can give them comfort because of their fear of death.
I have never met family and friends at a funeral who did not hope that their loved one is in heaven. In their eyes, it is not necessary how their lover lives, the religion they follow, or the sin they may commit in the family. To family and friends good people (their loved ones) deserve to be in heaven.
But what did Jesus say? He (Jesus) is the only way!
Why should humans go to heaven through Jesus if they die? This is the question that many are trying to understand. Using the Holy Bible as our guide I will answer the question why Jesus?
To answer this question we must first understand how God describes the human race.
Romans 1 vs 18-32 says: “But God shows his wrath from heaven against all sinners, wicked people who drown the truth by their wickedness: they know the truth about God because he has revealed it to them since then. the world has been created, men have seen the world and the sky: Through all that God has created, they can see his invisible qualities, his eternal power and his heavenly nature: therefore they have no excuse for not knowing God.
Yes, they know God, but they cannot worship him as God or thank him. And they began to think about how God is. Thus, their hearts became dark and confused. They are saying that they are wise, instead of being completely stupid. And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worship idols made like mere men and birds and beasts and creeping things. Therefore, God left them to do whatever their heart desires. Thus, they used themselves to do bad things and disgraceful things. They trade the truth about God with lies. Therefore, they worship and worship the things that God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.
That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even women turn against the natural way to have sex and have sex with each other. And men, instead of being sexually united with women, they are waking up to each other’s desire. (Sexual). Since they thought it was foolishness to acknowledge God, he left them in their foolishness and allowed them to do things that should never be done. Their lives are full of all kinds of evil, sin, greed, hatred, envy, murder, strife, deceit, wickedness, and gossip. They are adulterers, haters of God, arrogant, proud, and proud. They created a new way of sin and disobeyed their parents. They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no compassion. They know that God’s justice demands that those who do these things should die, yet they do so. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them too. “
Romans 3 vs 10-12 says… “No one is righteous. Not even one! There is no one who is truly wise, no one who seeks God. They have all turned away; they have all become worthless . No one did good, not a single one.”
As we can clearly see from the Scriptures, God describes man as wicked and corrupt. None of us are good!
Even when we think we are good people, in the light of God’s righteousness, we are not. All people deserve to be under the wrath of God because of sin. This is our own standing before God.
We are sinners, and we are not worthy of God’s love and favor. We deserve His wrath and righteous punishment for our rebellion against Him. The truth is, no one deserves to enter Heaven when they die.
We all deserve hell!
Before we can understand our need for Jesus, we must face the elephant in the room. We must seek to see ourselves as God sees us in our natural state. We are unclean, depraved sinners!
Yes, you and I are wicked and corrupted by sin. We should spend eternity subject to God’s wrath in hell. Apart from Jesus, that is how God looks at us, and we are considered God’s enemy. His anger is directed at you and me directly, and He (God) is doing it. God’s perfect justice requires that we die for our sins.
Ezekiel 18 vs 20, God said, “The soul that sins, will die!”
But God, who is rich in love and mercy did something profound without speaking. He gave his only begotten Son, so that whoever believes in him will not perish, but have eternal life. God sent his son to the world, not to judge the world, but to save mankind through him. There is no judgment (God’s anger) on anyone who believes in it. But anyone who does not believe in him is already judged because he did not believe in the only begotten Son of God (John 3 vs. 16-18).
By believing in the Son of God and trusting in His finished works, you and I are declared righteous by God. By believing (Faith) we are made righteous with God and are no longer under wrath.
What works did Christ finish?
Jesus Christ did many things while he was on Earth, but there are three important works that he needed to do in order to save sinners from hell.
The first work that Jesus did was that he lived a sinless life. From birth to death he does not sin. He lived in perfect obedience to God’s Holy Law. This is something that no human being can or will ever do. Jesus met and kept all the commandments of God. He did this for us! Jesus is the perfect sacrifice because no sin is found in Him. He is perfectly righteous in God’s sight.
The second work that Jesus did was that he suffered and died on the cross as an atonement for our sins. 1 Peter 2 vs 24 says, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By your wounds you have been healed.”
Jesus healed us by taking away our sins and paying us the full debt we owe. He died under the wrath of God that we deserve. Only God the Son can do this for us. It is an amazing act of love that Jesus would do this for us. Oh, how I love Jesus!!!
Because of Christ’s atoning work on the cross, my sins have been paid in full and therefore, I can boldly enter the presence of God through Jesus Christ.
The third work that Jesus did was that he rose from the dead on the third day. Jesus, after he died, was buried in a tomb for three days. On the third day, he resurrected thus, he defeated death, and assured them that all who believe in him will have eternal life. Just as Jesus was raised to life, so all who trust in him will be raised to eternal life.
When we put our faith in Jesus and in His finished works, God’s Holy Spirit comes immediately into our lives and seals us for all eternity. Now we belong to our Lord Jesus Christ 100%, and no one, not even us, can separate us from the love of God found in Christ Jesus. Our eternal home in heaven is secure because of what Christ did for us.
We believe that Jesus is the only way to heaven. We believe that Christ fulfilled God’s law for us. We believe that Christ died for our sins and paid the full penalty for us. We believe that Christ rose from the dead and sits at the right hand of God in heaven always praying for us. We believe that Christ is coming again in the future to build His Church (Born Again), establish His kingdom and judge the world.
Jesus Christ is truly the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
How can we be sure that we will go to heaven when we die? By hearing your name!!
Act 4 vs. 12 says, “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
