Bulldogs – A Guide to the Breed
The word “bulldog” was first used around 1568 and may have applied to different ancestors of modern bulldog breeds. The ancestors of the Bulldog are an ancient breed called Bullenbeissers. These are Mastiff-like dogs used for guarding and hunting wild animals in Greece, Egypt and Rome. These dogs come in many sizes and are used by Teutonic and Celtic tribes. In England the first large Bullenbeisser were bred around the 13th century to start a child as bull baiters.
In a few years this breed was perfected to become the best bull, it is incredibly interesting and perfect for pain. Also the weight of the bulldog is mainly in his head so that when the bull shocks the dog less to break his back. In 1875 the Bulldog Club was formed in England and members of the club met regularly at the Blue Post Pub on Oxford Street, London. They built the first standards for perfection in the breed. Unfortunately, Bull baiting and dog fighting were banned in England in 1935, so since then breeders started some selective breeding to remove some of the aggressive nature of the breed and produce dogs that are pets of it’s the best.
Bulldogs are still always determined, stubborn and difficult to train but they are intelligent, devoted and amusing. We need a stable handler to train the Bulldog but as they are sensitive to sound so will not respond well to yelling and screaming. In fact it is more likely to go and pick up in a comfortable place and completely ignore the owner.
The bulldog’s compact, stocky body results in a very special and unique personality. They are also well known for their short muzzles and saggy skin on their faces that create a trademark frown. They are in different colors and have a smooth short coat; The typical weight for a fully grown man is around 25 kilos. The Bulldog has an uncompromising temperament and is an excellent family dog that will get along with children and other pets. The breed is more friendly than a good guard dog but can protect a family member in need.
As with many pure breed dogs, the Bulldog is prone to some health problems. Some have breathing issues due to the shape of the lower jaw and the shortness of the muzzle, this often causes them to snore. They can suffer from cysts between the toes, these causes can be treated by a veterinarian, and in older bulldogs hip issues sometimes occur. It is important to clean the face of a Bulldogs breed daily to prevent infection due to the accumulation of moisture and brushing the teeth regularly with a soft toothbrush is recommended.
Like all dogs, bulldogs need regular exercise to keep their weight down and reduce the chances of health problems related to the lungs and heart. The breed is also very sensitive to heat and you should take great care of them during hot periods making sure there is always shade and water.
Because of their popularity and stability, Bulldogs have been adopted as mascots of many sports teams and universities. They have also appeared in many TV shows, movies and movies. Some examples of famous Bulldog characters are:
