What is a "Normal" Bowel Movement?

With every new test I ask the same question…

“How many bowel movements do you have each day? Do you have any mucous, blood, diarrhea or constipation?”

The urge to urinate is often strongest in the morning: only getting up makes her stomach move. The stomach also sends a signal when it expands after a meal. This gastrocolic condition is why many people, and especially children, need to go to the bathroom right after eating. The reflex becomes weaker with age, which is one source of constipation problems and why good and regular bowel habits help.

Laxatives: Some patients are so convinced that they need daily laxatives that they are afraid to do without them. It takes time for the changed diet to affect the bowels and for the bowels to regain their normal rhythm. Be patient. Enemas are the best solution.

Healthy bowel movement requires eating a large amount of fluids and bulk foods. The patient should drink two to three quarts of liquid every day. Most come from unrefined foods. Oat bran, wheat bran, brown rice, green vegetables, apples, and pears are just a few examples of high-quality, high-fiber foods.

Some patients will be able to add bulk preparations of psyllium, but others find that psyllium will cause too much gas. For these people, supplementation of ALL flax seeds (eat without eating them) and bran will help. And a single 8-ounce cup of coffee in the morning often helps people have regular bowel movements.

Natural laxatives include:

These bacteria belong to the Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus bifidus strains and are carried through breastfeeding into our intestines as infants. The body uses L. acidophilus and L. bifidus in the final stages of digestion that repair each other as necessary to maintain overall harmony with the body.

When the good bacteria can’t keep up, the bad bacteria overpower the gut to cause intestinal flora imbalances that lead to small bowel diseases, gas, diarrhea, IBS, and Crohn’s.
