Turtle Ears – Does Your Pet Turtle Recognize Your Voice?

Draw a turtle, with the simple question below, “Where are the turtle’s ears?” made its way to my desk the other day. The drawing, drawn by a young child, shows a turtle without ears. The child asked me “How do you hear?”

In fact, turtles have ears, which are small holes on the sides of their heads, that allow sound waves to enter.

In the past, people used to think that they were deaf. This assumption can be made from the fact that turtles do not have visible or fleshy ears that protrude from the sides of their heads, as is the case with most animals.

Even though turtles do not have two visible external ears, they can, however, recognize sounds, and “hear.” They don’t hear as quickly as we humans, but they have the appropriate auditory nerve and the corresponding brain center needed for them to feel and determine environmental vibrations. The sound waves are collected through the small external holes on the side of the turtle’s head, and transmitted through the middle ear, which is well designed to increase the volume of the sound waves. Thus, although scientists feel that turtles rely on their senses of sight and smell, which are more developed, they can certainly hear.

According to the anatomical nature of each animal has a corresponding physiological function, the reason why the ears of turtles are inside their heads is so they have more wind power whenever they are in water. This will allow them to explore the sounds and vibrations in their environment.

Although turtles do not have a tympanum or eardrums that gather sound waves for more precise hearing, turtles are capable of detecting low frequency sounds and detect vibrations, whether they are in water or on land.

Because of this, they rely mostly on their vision and sense of smell to help them get around. There are even theories that suggest that the sense of smell developed in turtles allows them to return to the exact beach where they first landed in order to mate and lay their eggs.

You know that turtles find or identify food, mates, and surroundings by their sense of smell. The vision of the turtle is also excellent. They can distinguish between colors and shapes, things that are important for animals that live or spend time in water. What turtles lack is a refined sense of hearing, they make up for it with their sense of smell and their excellent vision.

Some people consider their pets as important as their children. Whether true or not, some turtle owners think that their beloved pets are able to recognize and respond to their voices!

We have no objective data to prove or disprove this theory. The way turtles respond may, according to some experts, come from the way they perceive vibrations around them. Maybe it’s not the sound or the quality of the sound that’s different through the turtle’s ears, but the vibrations coming from the closing doors and other vibrational movements or stimulations around them. Let’s hope that future research will help us determine the truth about turtle ears!
