The Gulf Oil Spill – When Will it End?

When I first heard about the explosion on the deep water highway, I thought little of it. When the rest of the list came in, my ears perked up and I thought “This could be bigger than we thought.” Soon after, we began to hear on the news that the plane had sunk; then the BIG news hit on April 22nd when an oil spill began to appear on the field around the area of the well. This tragedy, after being left at the end of the history of the news system, now becomes the only story that the media is focusing on. Soon, people realized that it was the blow-out preventer that had failed, and this is the main technique that can prevent all oil and gas leaks. The oil spill continues to escalate as BP and the US government try more desperately to contain the spill.

The oil disaster has had a major impact on local tourism in the Gulf region, with oil slicks covering the coast, some people don’t want to visit these cities anymore, and rightly so. I feel sorry for all the business owners and employees who rely on the travel industry for their livelihood, and yet I hope they survive this crisis I know some of these businesses have already closed and may do more is to follow. The US governments response can be compared to that of the previous administration’s response to Hurricane Katrina which was much longer and more effective. Compared to this however, Hurricane Katrina did not greatly reduce the survival of long-term species in the area as a significant part of the disaster occurred within a week, so the main effects of the Hurricane were only short-term and thus reduced the risk for the general bird number. .

When you see hundreds of birds flocking to the beaches of the southern states you can’t help but feel sorry for them and even though the National Guard and many, many charities are doing a fantastic job saving thousands of birds still dying of drowning or starvation. The importance of this event will be important in changing the current administrations energy policy and hopefully we can all benefit from a better, greener future from this.

But what this article is really about is the time frame for the events. The time when all analysts believe that this can actually stop is mid-August; while relief wells will allow the leaking well to be filled with drilling fluid, blocking the flow and ending the short-term disaster. However, the long-term effects of this disaster will also be felt long into the future, with consequences stretching into long-term estimates for decades. Some of these consequences are the inevitable change in energy policy which has come directly from this disaster.

The new energy policy will have a dramatic and lasting impact on the way the US conducts itself in the world of oil and possibly in other fossil fuels. Many other economic results are too numerous to list here, but the state of the tourism industry in all coastal resorts and cities will be a major test for this administration. Can we see a bail from the travel company like we see from the banks? Inevitably, as we are recovering from the biggest economic crisis in decades, the administration wants to reduce costs and therefore will not finance another bailout. Although this is unlikely, I believe that the long-term future of the tourism industry in these areas is at risk, and if they do not get back on their feet after this disaster; then they can create a large scale of unemployment and crime.

What you have to take away from this article is this; the future is uncertain for the many thousands of animals threatened by oil. The long-term effects on the tourism industry in the Gulf are catastrophic; and BP and management are doing everything possible to catch, stop and contain oil. People will be angry, but maybe, maybe, maybe, America can gain from this; through a new energy policy for a brighter future.
