Shaolin Feet and Shaolin Fists

The North Fists and the South Fists are considered a beneficial combination. The two strands of Kung Fu education, generating different techniques, perspectives and histories, need to be reconciled. The following autobiographical sketch considers the institutional influences and key individuals shaping my own career in Shaolin Martial Arts.

Family & Lineage

You should really know where you are coming from and be able to tell anyone who asks your Teacher’s name & the style(s) you practice (eg Changquan)! It also counts if you can name your Teacher – anything else is more bonus points. Here are two lines of teaching I have followed for the past 38 years!

Shaolin Foot

At’a, (Ao Tai) General of The Ever Victorious Army, was also the bodyguard of Captain Charles Gordon (later General Gordon of Khartoum), during the T’ai Ping T’ien, often referred to as the Boxer Rebellion and originated in Malisia. almost a few Malaysians Grandmaster Leong and Grandmaster Chee, who also live there, know each other. Yap Leong, when he was young, lived near Si Jo (Founder of the Tradition) Leong Fu in Ipoh and he knows some interesting stories about him! What few people know is that Grandmaster Leong Fu was also the World Middleweight Wrestling Champion for 3 consecutive years before his sudden retirement– his Chin Na (combination and technique control) must have been awesome!.

Grandmaster Leong Fu taught Rex Jones, meeting him while Rex served in the SAS (Special Air Service) during the Malayan ‘Emergency’ (CE 1948-60) teaching him Ao Tai Dao (At’a’s Way); Jern Jing Kuen Fat (Elephant Fist Way) and other Changquan styles include the 5 Animal (Wu Xing) instruments and much more. The Serpent Form, the Manifestation Form of Hoan Lung Quan comes from here. The term ‘Emergency’ is often used as the insurer, Lloyds of London, will refuse to pay for ‘War’ damage! Sifu Jones became Leong Fu’s high school student who received the title and rank of ‘Flying Dragon’ (Fei Lung).

Si Gung Rex Jones founded Fei Lung Quan (Flying Dragon Society) and became my Sifu in 1972, remaining my teacher until he retired around 1992. Tattoo of the Red Dragon, with a symbol above it (sign of no. 1 Student) ) in front of my left, since I became a Sifu, shows the system and system of Fei Lung Quan as being more than a book source. Hoan Lung Quan (Red Dragon Society) works in a similar and related style. Rex also gave me my Kannada name ‘Wo Lei’ (The Fox) which I sometimes use in the literary- or Mandarin equivalent Hu Da Ge (Big Brother Fox).

Shaolin Fists

Grandmaster Chee Kim Thong has many famous teachers (1) see “Secrets of Kung Fu” Vols. 2-3) (2) and Si Jo Chee’s disciples included Yap Cheng-Hai, Chan See-Meng and Yap Leong. I was taught, briefly, at an unforgettable conference in London, by Yap Cheng-Hai, but eventually (I am happy to say) events followed a pattern and I became a closed student. of Grandmaster Yap Leong. Yap Leong knew and spoke highly of both Leong Fu and Rex: “You are very Fei Lung!” His first words to me about the latter – those who have met him know that Yap Leong is not addicted to idle compliments! So, my ongoing thanks to all my Teachers. Chief Yap Leong welcomed me to the ‘Family’ in 1993.

Other Teachers

I have also had other teachers: Shr Yanzi (Head of Shaolin Temple UK) for 3 years, Yang Jwing-Ming (albeit briefly), even John Gunning (disciple of Leong Fu and Fei Lung Quan Senior Sifu) and, most of all recently, Master Wu in Beijing recently (where I decided to return for further training). All these are the best teachers of high levels that I strive to imitate to the best of my ability.

Recent developments

Grandmaster Yap Leong has since founded Shaolin Fists International with myself as a Founding Member and Technical Advisor. A long (and continued) study with him over the past 18 years has led me to further qualify as a Sifu in Qigong, receive Iron Shirt Training and expand my knowledge and understanding of Kung Fu and Qigong styles and methods in particular. This has affected my Kung significantly. Fu and my teaching method, such as his HYL (Health, Youth & Longevity) Energiser Programme. Those who want a deeper understanding of inner energies and Nei / Wei Dan Qigong, an important prerequisite for progressing to the Kung Fu levels of higher and study levels, will find such a multi-level system of considerable benefit.

Originally designed to provide longevity, or life extension on the battlefield, Kung Fu spilled over into life in general. Chinese martial artists find that they enjoy a long life (3) through Kung Fu Training, one in which they can achieve things they never thought possible. Hence the popularity of Kung Fu as a “way of life” and as a personal development tool in China which has spread widely throughout the world.

All in all, so far, it is a case otf ‘Nan Chuan: Bei Tui’ Southern Hands and Northern Feet. Although this is considered the best balanced martial arts “diet” by some – nothing can be done without the best teachers I have referred to in the body of this text except A bad dose of military indigestion!

Notes and References

(1) And he had six in all, a blanket of many different styles. I am indebted to ‘Toby’ who posted a detailed comment on an earlier version of this article in which he tried to abridge a world from memory, inadvertently I said that he had only three. He also indicated that he was succeeded by his son Master James Chee who, I believe, is studying in Australia,
