Top Tips For a Healthy and Happy Chinchilla

Chinchillas are lovely pets, surprisingly friendly and very inquisitive. They will be happy with their cage in almost any room of the house but as chinchillas are nocturnal animals they will be active for much of the night so the sleeping area, especially the children’s bedroom, may not be the best location.

Once you have found a good place for your chinchillas to live (and remember that they like a big cage so they will need more room than smaller animals like hamsters), what other ideas are you need to know for healthy and happy chinchillas?

Chinchillas are very social creatures and therefore do well in pairs. That said, if you get two of different sexes that become a breeding pair you should expect to have several litters of baby chinchillas in a year. If you don’t have room for a full-grown chinchilla population or to house the babies while they grow, consider getting two chinchillas of the same sex.

Because their teeth are constantly growing, chinchillas will eat almost anything they come across as a way to keep their teeth in good condition. This means that you must make sure that anything in their cage is safe for them to eat and that items outside the cage are not safe. It is not uncommon for chinchillas to grab curtains or blankets and drag them into the cage where they continue to bite them. Because they need to eat, include items such as tree branches (apples are ideal) or untreated wood shelves. The airy half of the bottom of the cage gives the chinchilla something to chew on and also a different surface to sit on. Don’t be surprised if this quickly becomes more rounded with less corners to dust!

Chinchillas love to exercise and will enjoy the opportunity to explore outside their cage, under careful supervision. Remember to close the windows and doors in the room you will let them out, and block any small openings they can find and escape. They will also take the opportunity to eat things they pass over, including dresser boards, electrical cables and loose wallpaper. This can be minimized with close monitoring and protection of vulnerable areas. Alternatively, a staircase can provide a safe place for your chinchilla to run around (and up and down) as they will spend most of their time out of their cage hanging around, with few obstacles.

Your pet chinchilla should give you years of entertainment, fun and companionship and will thank you for following these little tips.
