The Three Brain Theory

So you want to know why you just abused that person in the car in front of you within a split second without the logic that came in to play? Maybe you want to know why you are attracted to some men/women and not others? Or even why your dog does the crazy things it does? It all comes down to three brain concepts, explaining why we humans are the most evolved species on this planet yet still sometimes act like lizards and why we still make irrational decisions when we’re in love , then think they are completely logical.

The triple brain system is a system created in order to understand why we do the things we do, even though they may seem illogical at times. The basis of the theory is that the human brain has not simply evolved to the next level from our animal ancestors, but rather the brains have evolved more on their own. The primal brain is the physical brain, this is essentially the fight or flight response found in everything from insects to lizards to humans, at the base of its basic survival principles: survival and reproduction. The second brain is the emotional brain, it is found in many mammals and allows us to connect emotionally to things and do more than just having fight or flight responses. The emotional brain is found in everything from cats and dogs to larger brained animals like cows and horses. So common and irrational are these brains, most of us don’t even know how they work and how they make us do crazy stupid things from time to time. Now the third brain is the brain that only humans on this planet have completely (apes and our closest ancestors have small parts) and what really separates us from animals, is the intellectual brain. The intellectual brain is the most intelligent brain as we always think the most important and do most of our thinking. However, what many people do not know is that the other 2 brains are actually more powerful and a lot of time make our decisions for us instead of the logical brain, and simply through the process of backward rationalization they make us feel like we are. has made a logical decision.

These three brains conflict in our daily lives, and by default, without much effort put into self-control, the first brain often wins. This is why we often jump off the hook of yelling at people when we feel threatened without even thinking about it. It is also the reason why we often make stupid decisions chasing the love of our life by doing things that do not make any logical sense but make a hell of a lot of sense to the emotional brain. I often equate them as having 3 different people inside your head telling you different things every time, yet they tell you things in vastly different ways. The emotional brain reports information back to you through your gut feeling, whether you are happy, sad, anxious etc., your emotional brain is telling you that you think something is good or bad with your current situation. Your brain reports to you primarily through fear, its duty is to protect you from harm so whenever it senses danger it holds us up or tells us to run away. The physical brain is also what controls our sexual urges and desires, and that’s why we get so confused when we see an attractive member of the opposite sex, that’s our mating sensation coming in from our own brain.

You will also encounter instances where it doesn’t make any logical sense to be afraid yet your emotional and physical brains make you afraid, generally these are instances where thousands of years ago when the physical and emotional brains began to be created will make you do. sense to be afraid, but these days we have safety measures to stop you from harm. Such things include going parachuting, working at a very high construction site or being close to a young woman in a household. In the past being the highest on the ground meant you had to hold on for dear life or you would die, these days with all our safety equipment this is not an issue but our own brains don’t know this and try to be and stay alive by any means possible (generally by clinging on for dear life).

So how does this help us? We will now know that we have 3 brains that are completely different people living inside our heads and we can learn to sell these brains. Unfortunately many people are going about this the wrong way. They don’t know that there are three brains and when their physical or emotional brain tells them to do something, they completely shut down their rational brain and just follow its orders, thinking they are following logic when they are not really. This is why you observe others doing the strangest things (fudging anyone?) and if you ever question them on it they get really defensive, then later in the day look back on what they did and sometimes see in it. A new light and see where they went wrong and how stupid they are (when their brains come back online). So the key to controlling the other 2 brains is to know that your logical brain always changes when certain events happen and you must change it (by thinking logically and paying attention to everything everyone is telling you without defenses) and think about it. situation that just happened.

Once you’ve turned it back on you can also start to teach other brains to respond differently, stop other brains from taking over when a situation occurs and think about what you did and then try to change it. to doing something else. Like when I visit my parents I notice how often they get angry when they are watching football and someone drops the ball or does something stupid, while I laugh at the exact same event. It’s not that I don’t think it’s a bad game, I just came to know that it’s only a game and it’s not worth getting angry over and at the same time training my emotional brain to think the same way.

Of course you can’t train your brain overnight, it will take time, simply whenever an event occurs, realize that your emotional or physical brain is causing you to stop in your tracks, then think wisely (do it I’m really right to be upset about this) and take steps to replace those bad emotions with better ones. Over time your emotional mind and body will begin to behave like naughty children now given strict instructions, and they will allow you to live a much happier and more enjoyable life.
