Farm Life with Sam

Sam is a Belgian horse that weighs about 1900 pounds and stands about 17.3 hands tall. He is gelded and up to 27 years old. Now, life with Sam can be interesting. If you have discovered how big it is, there will be no stopping you.

I think one of the most fun games with Sam has been with our little friends Jack Russell who decided to take Sam. This little boy will eat Sam alive. Our daughter rides Sam and comes around the house unaware that TJ is out. We were in the house and heard him barking and grumbling. Of course, our daughter was waiting for Sam who was just standing there looking at this little dog. Sam doesn’t know what to think about TJ. It took some doing but TJ was convinced to go inside. Sam was not afraid at all.

Sam is my son. If you’re trying to let the goats out, I can open the back door and yell-SAM BACK! He stopped, took a few more steps, and looked around to see where I was. Sometimes, I close the door to see what he will do. Usually, it’s just a leisurely walk.

The only thing I’ve ever seen bother Sam is the high wind- I’m talking 45 mph plus wind. Now, it is amazing to see the greatness of a horse with all four hooves in the air. We have seen him stir once. We were filling the stock tank and my son, who was over six feet tall, was standing next to Sam. Bozey, our 21-year-old quarter horse, decided to hit the rope, sending water up Sam’s nose. Sam has grown and our son saw first hand how big Sam is.

Now, water is a big issue with our horses. Our daughter was filling the stock tanks in the colt’s pen when she heard a little noise. There’s Bozey playing with the rope and Smokey, his colt, trying to drink from the tank. As our daughter went up to the fence to get the rope from Bozey, Smokey grabbed the end of our daughter.

When it’s hot here (most of the year), our horses like to rinse with water so filling the stock tanks can be time consuming. They love to bathe, however, like most horses, they immediately lie down in the sand and roll.

Sam will wait forever to let the kids sit on him to do their picture. He loves children and our grandchildren love to be led around so they can ride him. Our chickens and roosters can walk around and under it. We even had a baby pygmy goat out standing between Sam’s back legs. Sam froze. We freeze so we can summarize the situation. The little Billy played and we were off to catch him. Sam was not afraid at all.

We have been told stories by Sam’s previous owner of how he stopped, watched and listened at intersections. I honestly believe he is one of the smartest horses I have seen in a long time. Both Sam and Bozey took the lead from me without even being on the lead line. This helps a lot if they are loose.

We thought we forgot to lock the park gate but we couldn’t really believe after all these years it would happen so often. Well, it’s Bozey’s fault. The last time he let Sam and himself out was about midnight. I heard Smokey having a fit and got up to check out what was going on. There, standing at the back door were Sam and Bozey. It’s as if they know they’ve done something wrong and are there to confess. We walked them back to their pasture and went back to sleep.

Bozey was ill and resigned. He was ready to run and romp but I wasn’t quite ready to let him. He found his chance to go out and he worked around the loose in the yard and to the forest. I came out of his pen, shouted, and pointed to his gate. He came to stop, turned and slowly went back into his pen.

I have been truly blessed with Sam and Bozey. Like all others who have lived in a farm or farm, we have had animals that have tried their patience. There is no substitute for well-trained animals. Sam and Bozey have helped create wonderful family memories and I’m sure they will continue to do so for some time.
