A Naturalist Perspective Reflection on the Film The Lion King

The Lion King is a perfect movie to watch for students studying natural sciences. It features the application of several concepts that are addressed in the classroom, especially the relationship between different species and their environment.

The film shows the nature of the most powerful consumer and predator nest to the man in the Animlia Kingdom – the lion. In the movie, Simba, Mufasa’s heir is portrayed as the king of Pride Rock. The lion is considered the chief in his habitat because apart from his size, thunderous sound, and kingly appearance, he is apparently the most powerful of the other living things. Thus, Simba inherited the entire kingdom of Pride Rock, covering “everything touched by fire.”

The Lion King portrays the virtuous Simba as a prodigy in nature, making friends with other creatures like Pumba and Timon, and showing kindness to those who deserve it. In a real life scenario, however, lions are only companions to their fellow species, specifically, members of their group which is called the pride. The movie shows this unit as being in a family like that of Simba and his friend Nala. The reason why male lions roam around until they are adults, challenging a pride of males from another territory, and taking over that territory after they win, is actually the female lions. reigns over pride.

Living a sedentary lifestyle by living in a specific area where food and water are abundant, lions prey on weaker animals that belong to different groups, such as antelopes, zebras, and buffaloes as shown in the film. After eating a scavenged meal, these animals rest for several hours after which they return to their natural hunting lifestyle.

Another concept presented in the film is that of a tropical or savannah. Pride Rock, which is the location of the film, is an example of this dry and grassy plain. The film depicts this biome which is tropical in nature and is much drier than tropical forests. Particularly dominant in the African continent, rainfall in the savannahs is very seasonal and is often followed by long periods of drought. This nature prevents them from being filled by trees which only grow where there are deep cracks in the surface or deep soil, allowing contact with the water underneath. Palm trees, fruit-bearing trees, and a large cover of grasses are available as producers. They provide food for the animal population, which in the film includes lions, giraffes, and zebras. The conflagrations that come out of the movie occur naturally in a real life scenario. This event maintains plant life and promotes grass growth.

The concept of savannah gives the correct definition to lions as “Kings of the jungle” because these powerful carnivores do not prefer to live in the forest but rather in open forest lands where trees are not abundant. The Lion King proves the fact that lions prefer to live in the savannah because they appreciate the cool climate. Above all, following and catching their prey is not difficult for them because of their yellow coat that allows them to be camouflaged in the dead grass that is similar to their color.
