Evolution of a Fairy Tale: The Three Little Pigs

James Orchard Halliwell-Phillips included the Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf fairy tale in his 1843 book called Nursery Songs and Nursery Tales. It is the first written version of the story, although it probably existed in some form in the oral tradition. The written form of the story may have borrowed elements from other fairy tales of the time, such as The Wolf and the Seven Young Children to create a new fairy tale. It is not clear what the exact origin of the story is, but this 1843 version is the beginning of the Three Little Pigs story as we know it today.

Joseph Jacobs compiled a collection of fairy tales in a book called English Fairy Tales, published in 1890. He cites Halliwell-Phillips as the source of the Tale of the Three Little Pigs in his book. In fact, it seems to be a word for word reprint of the 1843 printing of the story. However, it is often Joseph Jacobs who is credited as the creator upon whom many modern versions of the story are based.

In Jacobs and Halliwell-Phillips’ version of the fairy tale the mother pig sends her children out into the world to find their fortune. The first pig refused and the house came out of the grass. The wolf came, broke into the house and ate the pig. The second pig built a house from branches. The wolf came, broke into the house and ate the pig. The third pig made his house out of bricks. The wolf came, unable to enter the house, and tried to trick the pig into entering. The wolf fell into a pot of boiling water and the pig ended up killing and eating the wolf. There is very little behavior given to pigs, especially the first two. We know that their choices are not good, but the pigs are not portrayed as dumb or lazy in the story.

Joel Chandler Harris includes a variation of the Three Little Pigs in the book Nights with Uncle Remus. He called the fairy tale The Tale of Pigs and it had 5 pigs instead of three. This species has a mother pig who is close to death when she warns her 5 children to beware of Brer Wolf. Pigs named Big Pig, Little Pig, Speckle Pig, Blunt, and Runt. The big pig built a house to brush. Little Pig built a house of trees. Speckle Pig built a mud house. Blunt built a house with planks. Finally, Runt built a stone house. However, the wolf does not care, and wants to enter the house. The wolf tricks the pigs into letting them in and eats them, except for Runt. Runt outwits the wolf and ends up killing him in the fire when he comes down the chimney. Joel Chandler Harris really adds more personality to the pigs by giving them names and each of them also has a character by warning their mother about the wolf.

Another version of the Three Little Pigs is in Andrew Lang’s collection of fairy tales called The Green Fairy Book, published in 1892. Like Harris, he also names the pigs: Browny, Whitey, and Blacky. Also like Harris, it gives the pigs more character than the Jacobs version. Browny is said to be a dirty pig who likes to roll in the mud alone and disobeys his mother. Whitey is smart, but he is also greedy and selfish and only wants to eat. His mother warned him that one day he would suffer because of his greed. Blacky is a very intelligent pig who is neat and tidy. His mother was very proud of him, but he was alone. In this version of the story, the mother pig asks her children what kind of house they want and she will let them build it. Browny wants a mud house, Whitey wants a house made of cabbage and Blacky wants a house made of bricks. Another difference is that Lang’s version features a fox as the predator, not a wolf. Also, instead of knocking and blowing and blowing the first two houses in and eating the pigs, the fox can easily get into the houses to get the pigs. Then he took them to his den. Blacky escapes the fox in a similar way to Jacobs’ version, kills the fox, then goes to the fox’s den to save his brother and sister. Browny and Whitey then go to live with Blacky and give up their evil ways and all three live happily ever after. This is something different from Jacobs version.

Disney produced an animated short film of The Three Little Pigs, released in 1933. It contained some story elements from the Jacob and Lang versions of the fairy tale. Disney named the pigs Fiddler Pig, Fiddler Pig and Useful Pig. They also give more people like in the Lang version. Fifer builds his house from grass and Fiddler builds his house from trees. They do so quickly and then have fun every day while they tease their brother, Practical Pig, by working hard to build his brick house. They just want to play instead of working hard. Practical warns his brothers about the big bad wolf, but they ignore his warning. According to Jacob’s interpretation, the wolf howls and howls and blows the grass and tears down the house. But, instead of being eaten by the wolf, they run away from their own homes and end up in a brick house. The wolf tried to blow down the brick house but when he couldn’t, he tried to enter through the chimney. There is no attempt to trick the pigs into entering the brick house, as in the Jacobs or Lang version. Finally, if the fox gets burned in a pot of hot water, we run away in pain instead of being eaten by the pigs. Like Lang, Disney chose to soften the story by not killing the first two pigs. Unlike previous versions, Disney also let the wolf survive.

These are some variations of the Three Little Pigs fairy tale. To read the full version of Joseph Jacobs’ article please follow the link in the resource box.
