Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

What a nice read! Water for Elephants has to be one of the best reads for anyone who likes animals, races, and an incredibly flowing story. Working in or for the circus, especially in the past years, has to be one of the most difficult jobs and hard to deal with. Sara Gruen lets the reader smell the circus, taste the local foods, and be in the ring with the animals as they play. I haven’t been to the gym since I was a teenager, which was many years ago. Water for Elephants brings me back to those days and reminds me of some of the things I saw and smelled.

His family placed Jacob Jankowski in a home for the elderly because none of them wanted to “have” to take care of him. You have it, but it’s true. Jacob did not know whether he was seventy or seventy-three. He only knew that his age was somewhere around that range. Jacob hates the rest of the adults in the house, he hates food, and he hates the nurses who treat him as if he doesn’t know what he’s doing or what he’s saying. This is no life for Jacob Jankowski!

The story then goes back to when Jacob was at Cornell University studying to be a veterinarian. He was shy about women; want something to do with them socially. Jacob thought she must be the oldest virgin in the world. Jacob did well in school until one day, he was called out of class and told that both of his parents had died in a car accident. In fact, Jacob was a hypocrite, mentally and physically. This cannot happen to him. His parents were paying his way through college so he thought he could continue his education with whatever his parents left him. His father is also a veterinarian with a good practice. Jacob was beside himself when he was told that all his parents’ property was being taken because there was no money to pay the money. It happened that his father used to trade with his customers as they paid him chickens, eggs, meat or whatever they had, but not money.

This upset Jacob so much that he started to walk, and he walked until he reached the train track where the train was going, and he would jump to wherever he was going. This is how Jacob began his sports life when he jumped on that train and met other sports and sports officials. He didn’t know what was ahead. His inclusion in the circus world was difficult, as the circus did not want the young rubes around to see the circus people. When they saw that he was “almost” a veterinarian, they were happy, because they had no one to take care of the animals. This gives Jacob a ticket to the circus life.

As I said at the beginning, the author makes you feel as if you are in the committee as they set up their tents, make their shows, eat the food that is available, and pay when the money is available. running away from the law when one or more of the circus cause trouble with the law or the local authorities, traveling on a train that is not sure where they will end up, staying with the owner of the circus and upper management that treats a lot of help as garbage.

There is certainly a lot in the book about the personal lives of circus workers and owners. Also how does the circus get more animals and equipment legally or otherwise. It is an eye opener for anyone to read. It makes one wonder how these circus people fared in the days of traveling and living such an uncertain life.

The story goes back to Jacob every now and then in the unhappy house. The sports department came to the city and set it up next to the house, which made Jacob very happy to be close to the sports, even though he was not one of those who worked when he was young. The days pass so slowly as he waits for his family to come and take him on his big visit to the mountain.

I doubt anyone could read this book without coming away with a great understanding of those old circus days and what they meant to the people who worked that hard life. You will know that Sara Gruen put a lot of time and effort into her research for Water for Elephants. You will enjoy this book. It will entertain you and teach you at the same time.
