A Little History on Bird Watching
The question of when bird watching or birding officially counts as a past time, hobby, or sport is difficult to answer. No one knows the exact date birding was first described, but many believe it was around 1968. This is not just a lucky guess; It is believed to have actually passed in 1968 because the first known publication was born in that year. This publication is called The Bird Watcher’s Digest and can be described as more of a newspaper than anything. It is about 5 pages of literature, but it is the first official document of bird watching nature. This new book was established by the “American Bird Watchers Association” or ABA as they consider themselves. With this newly announced association quickly came America’s official interest in bird watching.
Once the American Bird Watchers Association was established so was a membership position. You can purchase a one-year membership for a nominal fee of $3.00. So what is this new book about for the sport of birding? For the first time in print, there is a publication that not only provides a book about birds, but also lists the rules for the new found sport. In 1969 the title changed from The Bird Watcher’s Digest to simply Birding as it became a popular term for bird watching, and is still in print today. The magazine publishes and distributes their publications every other month to their readers.
As more issues are published the official guidelines for birding are defined. Also in 1969 he proposed that the ABA which originally stood for the American Bird Watchers Association be changed to the American Birding Association. By the end of that year there were 128 members who joined the ABA and new officers were appointed to the organization. Between the ABA and the Birding Declaration, birding has become a popular sport. With the rising popularity will also bring a change in both the publication as well as organization.
In a short period of three years the publication was ready to bring a more professional perspective to the world of bird watching. Birding was made into a more journal like publication in 1971 and no longer took on the simple newspaper form it originally had. The new edition gives readers a lot of things to read. There is a total expansion on the pieces that go into the true art of birding, there are no species lists and opinion pieces, but true report pieces that bring a new kind of pleasure.
The July/August 1973 issue of Bidding brought a lot of buzz to the birding community. It was the first issue to have pictures published in the publication. It was also the first publication to report on the first ABA convention held in Kenmare, North Dakota. The newsletter published in July/August helps explain many new aspects of the ABA such as their charter report, newly elected ABA directors, and new rules approved by the ABA. This new word is popular for many reasons and it is a lot of information to the community that you live in that is growing rapidly in number. ABA membership has grown from its original 128 members in 1969 to 1,872 in 1974, a difference of 1,744 in as little as five years.
The 1970s brought some obvious changes to both birding and the ABA. In 1976, for the first time since the first five-page publication in 1968, Birding published a 400-page volume; different from his small beginnings. Also, the ABA recognized their second President, Arnold Small. In 1977, the Birding cover began to take on a different look, publishing beautiful covers that attracted many bird lovers. There is still some confusion in the birding area between the east coast and the west coast. It seems that many people are angry at the ways in which they are praised in the Californian that they praise him all the time.
From its beginnings in 1968 to 1988 Birding has remained behind schedule in its publications and is difficult to understand. It was up to Editor Paul Lehman to bring the journal back to its roots and back on track. He focused on making the magazine easy to understand for the readers, and he made many points of interest to expand it. In 1989 Lehman made good on his commitment and came out with a very different magazine that boasted an entirely new foundation. Lehman helped restore the magazine to being a true means of communication for the birding community.
In 1992 the ABA focused on the personal statistics of their members. They soon realized that most of its members were over 40, in general, they were older. Impressed with the statistics, they focus on recruiting people by offering less members as well as youth camps. They realized that without a change, the sport of fan could begin to decline. Although the membership is about 10,200 active members, the concern of having young birders is still an issue for the ABA community.
In 2007, almost 40 years have passed since the first publication of The Bird Watcher’s Digest¸ now known as Birding. The hopes of the ABA have been realized, and the art of birding is rapidly growing between North America and Canada. As many have noted, with growth also comes change. New birds do not necessarily hold the same shapes as older generations of birds. The new generation is also more focused on emerging new technology that many old timers may avoid. Birding Magazine is also feeling the impact of a new generation due to their updated staff. Change is in the air in both the ABA community and Birding publications, but change is not always a bad thing, with change comes a new opportunity for all in the birding community.
