Housebreaking A Backsliding Puppy Or Dog
The wash house leads the pack in terms of being the subject I get the most questions on, hands down. The key is really to make sure you follow the correct plan. Consistency will make house cleaning your dog or puppy as easy as possible. However, house cleaning is also difficult. And it’s not something you’ll do overnight, or even in a week, despite some ads you may see online that say you can. Divorce is a process. Your dog must learn through confirmation that he is not supposed to go to the potty.
Even if you follow all the steps you can still run into unexpected setbacks in the house-washing process, namely when your dog starts using the bathroom in the house again after they seem to have the house fall down or when your dog start using the bathroom in their box. There are different strategies for handling these issues so I will address them separately, starting with dealing with a dog that has started potty in the house after you think they are fully spoiled.
Before we get into the house, keep this in mind… even the best trained dogs will have accidents. The goal is for it to be so rare that you can’t remember 2 of the last 3 times it happened. Even my 11 year old dog left me a few months ago with a runny, small now near my backdoor after having been housebroken for ten! In that case the accident was entirely my fault. I was going out of town overnight and had nowhere else to go. Keep this in mind when training your dog or puppy because an accident may not mean your dog is completely recovered. However, if you are dealing with accident number 2 or more in a while you need to take immediate action to avoid any further problems.
The common thoughts I hear from owners when they are dogs start to back off on potty training is that the dog is angry, or does it because or to “get back” at the owner for some injustice done to them. I’m guilty of having these thoughts before too but the fastest way to a solution is to let that line of thinking go and adopt the mantra that your dog doesn’t do things out of spite or dislike of you. Dogs generally want their owners to be happy. They have become animals and want to be in a happy, cohesive pack. They also don’t have the same feelings that humans do and they don’t get angry or act out.
It’s very simple… from a dog’s perspective. You think you should go home now… you’ve done it so many times now without a fix (or the wrong kind of fix).
That means that when you can’t watch your dog it needs to be crated or confined so it doesn’t have accidents and it should have very limited access to roam freely around the house until you get it. House washing is back under control. Here is a specific procedure for handling house cleaning issues:
1. Tie your dog to a leash that is attached to your belt or a tool so that it never leaves your sight.
2. Keep a close eye and learn to know when your dog is hitting potential potty-stopping dreams. Usually most of the ground nose is located immediately before the accident. Look at your dog!
3. When you see your dog bending (or squatting) into the classic “I’m going to go potty” stop JUMP (even if standing), clap your hands together to get your dog’s attention, say “Ah-Ah” In a clear, steady voice (no need to sound hysterical here, the idea is to tease your dog to pay attention to you rather than go away).
4. Using the leash lead your dog outside. Pick up your dog if you have to in order to get them outside quickly.
5. Encourage your dog with gentle praise and smiles to potty once outside. Praise your dog LAVISHLY with treats and hugs and love for finishing outside. That’s what you want.
The “Ah-Ah” was enough to stop my Sheltie long enough for me to take him out. Then I would indulge with a smile and a friendly command of “potty time” until he went potty outside. Then it’s time for lots of praise and even some treats if you have a few hands. A few times of doing this and your dog will understand that pooping should only happen outside.
What I want you to get out of this process is that you should not focus on punishing your dog for using the bathroom in the house. In fact the only time you should even reprimand them for that is when you catch them in the act (with a firm “Ah-Ah” or “No”). Punishing your dog after the fact, even 3 minutes after, will not work.
Your dog will NOT, I also, will NOT, make the connection between what he did even 2 minutes ago (namely, pottying in the house) and you ranting and raving and shoving his nose in the mess.
Clean up the mess, don’t let your dog see you clean up, and be prepared next time to catch your dog once he’s squatting.
For a puppy this process is even easier because they tend to be light enough for you to really pick them up to take them outside. This is a good way to get your puppy outside quickly before they finish pottying indoors.
With my English Bulldog I ran into an unexpected problem that you may experience yourself. Even with the “Ah-Ah” company and the jump that won’t/can’t stop pottying once you start. And this is my sadness there is no end! But stick with the process. Take your dog out as quickly as possible and encourage them to potty.
So show your dog where you want them to go potty when they have to go potty. It adds character quickly. And make it an opportunity for them to potty outside by giving them love and treats when they do.
