General information:

Dingo is a wild dog of Southeast Asia and Australia. It is commonly known as the Australian wild dog. The dingo is believed to have originated in Asia and was brought to Australia by Austronesian traders about 3,000 years ago. They grew on display, and quickly spread across Australia, possibly with the help of humans. In a short time, the dingo has covered the entire continent and has become a powerful predator, possibly contributing to the extinction of carnivores such as the Thylacine. In recent generations, the dingo has become seen as a bacteria, and many measures, including a large fence, have made it stop attacking people’s property / welfare. Also, because of its inbreeding with dogs made by European settlers, the dingo gene pool is also considered to be increasingly “dirty”. Therefore, its current state is considered “Vulnerable”, with some believing its destruction to be inevitable.

Physical description:

Dingoes weigh between 22 and 53 pounds roughly, which is often smaller than wolves of the northern hemisphere. It stands about 17 – 25 inches at the shoulder, and measures 34 – 48 inches in length. Although the coat color varies slightly, dingoes are usually ginger in color. It has a lean muscular build with straight ears. Although the dingo does not occur in all packs (more often there are pairs or small family groups), it is capable of creating large groups to hunt.

Food:

Dingoes prey on many animals. Most of its prey species are small or medium in size, including lizards and rodents. However, the dingo will also take large prey, including sheep and kangaroos. Dingo is opportunistic, and in addition to hunting is also known to eat fruit and seeds and revenge from people.

Accommodation:

Modern dingoes are mainly distributed in small pockets of forests in Southeast Asia and in many parts of Australia. In Australia, it occurs mostly in the north. The “Great Dingo Wall” was started in the 1880s, and was meant to keep dingoes out of Australia’s slow-moving south-east and to protect sheep. Although it has managed to eliminate the dingo from being in large numbers, some dingoes can still be found in the southern parts of the continent today.

Amendment:

Dingoes breed once a year, generally between March and June. Pups are born after about 63 days, and litter sizes vary from 4 to 6 babies. The young may be on their own after a few months, or they may stay with their parents for a year before becoming independent. Males reach sexual maturity by a certain age, and females are capable of bearing children at about the same age.
