Bullying – Not My Child!

The headlines have recently reported the tragic consequences of terrorism. While this is not a new behavior, it is increasing because of the sense of anonymity that terrorists have when they use electronic devices to commit terrorism. Let’s get clear on a definition of terrorism. Any one of the three main conditions exists in the bullying situation: injury, unfair match (either in age / size or in numbers ie 3 children against one) and repetition. Examples of bullying include:

  • Hurting someone
  • Stealing or damaging someone else’s property
  • Ganging up on someone
  • Teasing is a hurtful way
  • Using bullying, such as insulting someone’s race, weight, intelligence, appearance or making fun of someone for being a boy or a girl
  • Touching or showing private parts
  • Spreading rumors about someone
  • Text message rumors or lies
  • Publishing rumors or lies on social networking sites
  • Without anyone having a reason or trying to get other kids to get rid of someone

Our schools spend a lot of time presenting a bullying certification curriculum, specifically addressing situations as they come to staff attention and the consequences for bullying. It is important that all adults have some kind of message about bullying.

So what can you do as a parent? First, it is important to understand that even good children and teenagers are capable of bullying. It is not a saying “young people will be young” when they do great harm to another person. We have seen the consequences of terrorism. Bullying is also salute to the bully! A major study showed that 60% of bullied boys in grades 6 to 9 were convicted of at least one felony as adults and nearly 40% of them had three or more convictions by date. Chapter 24!

Here are a few things you can do to reduce the odds of your teen becoming a bully:

  • Talk with your teens about empathy and be a living example of empathetic behavior. If your teen says hurtful words, use it as a teaching moment.
  • Arrange for your teen to volunteer and do community service as a way to develop their motivational “muscles.” They can volunteer at: Food Banks, Humane Animal Society, Community Hospitals, Count on residents in Nursing Homes or Assisted Living, Special Olympics etc.
  • If you give your teen a cell phone DO NOT enable text messaging and if still get a phone without a camera. (The camera is a whole other problem. Students are sexting which is considered a fourth degree felony and distributing child pornography). Monitor their Facebook and My Space accounts.
  • Trust and support school officials if they say your teen is being bullied and take some of the steps mentioned above.
  • Pay attention to your parenting style. “Child trauma has been linked to authoritarian discipline – a method that tries to control children through fear and the threat of severe punishment (Espelage et al 2000). Bullies are more likely to have experienced child abuse or witnessed violence in home (Bladry et al. 2003; Bauer et al 2006) Bullies are more likely to have parents who believe that anger is an acceptable way to solve problems”.
