So, What exactly is Brix?
Well, Brix is often referred to as the “sugar” or sucrose content of the plant or its fruits, but this is a very simplistic and inaccurate view of Brix. In fact, Brix refers to total soluble solids (TSS) in fruit juice or plant juice. Total soluble solids refers not only to sucrose (sugar) but also to fructose, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, proteins, hormones, and others found in plants, fruits or vegetables.
The higher the TSS value or Brix value, the healthier and more nutrient/mineral rich the plant is. Therefore, as it relates to agriculture and gardening, produce from high Brix crops will also be high Brix and will offer greater nutritional and “energy” value to the eater who produced it. .
