Toy Hazard Recalls
A high incidence of toy recalls has hit the US through the last decade. Perhaps legally imported and counterfeit “brand name” toys and toys imported into the US made in China and Taiwan, some of the worst offenders. From 1960 to 1990 there were many products from different countries including the USA which needed to make memories. With U.S. manufacturing standards adjusted to specifications for retail sales, much of the recall concern turns to imported items. Today, consumer protection companies carry large databases of recalled products, with the main manufacturer being China. Then there are US companies that compound those issues with their own import regulations and absence of quality testing. These types of toys carry the risk from vibration to lead exposure and everything in between. These are just a few examples of today’s toy hazard recalls.
Rhino Toys, a California based company has issued a recall of approximately 5500 packs of “Beado Handheld Bead Play Toys”. These are toys made in China and imported into the US by the company. They are manufactured with very low quality control requirements that have caused the wires that hold the small beads to the toys to be removed because they have not been held together with the proper adhesive. This has led to the toys being labeled as ‘shock hazard’ for young children. The affected toys have the model number of 1501 and the date code 02910 0432A. the toy sells in niche toy stores for approximately $12.
Family Dollar Stores Inc. of Charlotte, North Carolina, issued a recall of 1,800,000 packages of dart guns due to the risk of vibration. This is due to the asphyxiation deaths of a 9-year-old Chicago boy and a 10-year-old Wisconsin boy. The arrows are very soft and easily bend, if stuck in the mouth of a small child it can be inhaled into the throat causing shock death. The item is distributed at Family Dollar Stores only. The item numbers affected in this recall are P238 and 9328. Again, this product is made in China. Customers can return guns to any retail store for a refund.
Discount School Supply has launched a voluntary recall cooperating with the Consumer Safety Commission for roughly thousands of units of “Birds Two Eggs”, a cheap pack of two game eggs that produce lots of noise. Red colored eggs have excessive amounts of lead, a violation of American health and safety specifications. The toys were made in Taiwan and were offered for about $3.00 at discount School Supply retailers from April 2009 to December 2009.
Imagine Nation Books Ltd./Books Are Fun, based in Boulder, Colorado has issued a voluntary recall of the “Fly Dragonfly” toy airplane. Prior to the recall 49 reports of the battery charging in the toy heater were received. Six fires were reported coming out of the plane. The toy also goes by the name “Queen Bee” and they have the SKU # of 51727. The Dragonfly is offered as a gift in schools, office buildings and hospitals for approximately $38.00. The toy is made in China.
These are some of a large list (maintained by various consumer companies) of toy hazard recalls that pose little threat to being a direct hazard written in China. Before buying made in China, it would be a good idea to check any consumer protection agencies before giving it to your child. If you find that you have any toy or game that could be dangerous, throw it away or return it to the store immediately. It is illegal to sell any item that has been officially declared dangerous and is being recalled by either a federal agency or cooperatively by a business.
