Scrapbooks – Two Ways to Make Your Own Scrapbooks From Scratch

Making your own stationery from scratch can be something to do when you can’t find one in the right size, color scheme or affordable price. Let me share a couple of thoughts with you.

Make Your Own Custom Scrap Books

When you want an album to be a specific size that isn’t standard, a bookstore or print shop is your friend. Print shops carry light to heavy duty card in poster board sizes in a variety of colors. They have great cutting machines too and can make pages to your exact specifications. You may need a piece of card to make an album with several pages, depending on the size you want to fan with.

Simply select your cardboard and ask your printer to cut it to size. Your pages will be exactly the same size and you can then take them home and bind them the way you want, or you can ask the printer to discuss binding options with you.

You can make large albums this way or the other, make them almost as small as you want. The possibilities can be endless!

Of course, you can also cut your own pages from cardstock at home with a personal cutter or guillotine.

By making your album this way, you can decide the number and color or texture of each page.

Personalize your Album

Binding your notebook pages together at home can be as simple as punching holes in the edges of the pages and putting some paper binding rings or large brads through the holes. There are a number of other options though such as:

  1. Binding pages together with string, yarn, wire, leather or stitching (by hand or machine)
  2. Stapling the edges together
  3. Bind the pages with plastic clips and a binding device
  4. Marking the pages at a distance from the spine and connect them with another piece of strong card designed to the book and glued with glue to the paper.

Using binder rings allows you to decorate the spine of your album even more by attaching ribbons and fabrics to the rings, adding in charms or threaded buttons and so on.

Another way to make the spine unique and beautiful is to use your Bigshot die to make a specially designed bond cover, especially for a small album. Just choose your cardstock (I used a cardstock with a different color before the big effect) and work through your Bigshot with the capture folder. Once you have embossed it, sand the raised edges of the embossing. Now cut your paper bag to shape. Cut it in half lengthwise and fit it into your album.

You can also decorate the corners or edges of the binding with punches. Place the decorated card on top of its edges to hide the binding method, or you can add a decorative edge and then bind as you like.

Making Chipboard albums

Did you know that you can design chipboard to suit your own purpose? With patience you can cut even thick chipboard with a utility knife by cutting steadily in layers.

Say you want to make an album that has one but can’t find one in the stores. Use a square or oblong chipboard album instead. Take the album apart if it is bound with paper rings and place the first page on your work mat. Trace or draw the shape you want on the chipboard (in this case, draw to your heart’s design). Now take your craft knife and carefully score around the shape. Don’t try to cut all the way through the chipboard on the first go. Repeatedly cut along the lines of the heart with your craft knife until you have cut through all the layers of your chipboard page. Use it carefully, even pressing to cut as pushing too hard on the knives can lead to the blades getting stuck in the chipboard and making mistakes.

Now use the cut page as a template to drag your design onto the other pages and cut them out with your craft knife as before.

I usually sand the edges of my chipboard to remove any rough spots, clean up my drawing lines and to prepare the chipboard for painting, inking, gluing etc.

Think! You can make the page a pattern of initials, a word, a house, an insect, an animal, or any pattern you like! You can have your own unique albums this way.

Making your own albums from scratch or customizing a design can open up a whole other world of possibilities for scrapbooking. I hope it works for you!
