Planning an ongoing fun and celebration at work, with your family or friends is the best way to floss the group brain. These ideas have been known to improve relationships, stimulate creativity, make people feel appreciated, and build an invisible web of goodwill.

Most of the ideas below come from a survey of the most popular ideas used in medium to large organizations in North America. All the ideas have been tried in reality, and more importantly, they have been received with joy and appreciation and have produced positive results for the organizations that tried them. Use these ideas or let them inspire you to customize your own for your club environment. Most of them cost little or nothing and don’t require time beyond telling people about what’s going on. You can weave them into your day or use them to plan a special event. The most important thing is to not only talk about these ideas, but actually do them.

A. For Rituals:

1. Champagne celebration: Maybe the office just moved a big, long-fought-for report, or, maybe the division just had a productive week together. Why not celebrate working together—for whatever reason—with some champagne (or sweet grape juice if you prefer)?

2. Kazoo Praise: At Apple Computers, during a quarterly meeting, they put out kazoos to every group. Instead of clapping and clapping (how passé!), they bowed their heads with kazoos. Secret Pal: Everyone in the office / organization / division / etc. write your name, address, phone number, date of birth (actual birthday for those who have nothing to hide!), and a short list of things they want (such as: flowers, sports, chocolate, funny hats , large mail. cards, music, etc.). Fold and put the slips in the cap. Then each person takes a slip — make sure no one chooses their own name (if so, all slips go back in and try again). Once all the slips are distributed and everyone has someone else’s name, the fun begins! You are the Secret Pal to the person who has chosen your name. During the Secret Pal experience (we recommend at least three months) your “mission” is to do creative, spontaneous, fun, and enriching things for your partner…all anonymously of course. You can send flowers to your home; leave a note on your desk about how much you enjoyed working together, or admired your professional ability, or appreciated your contributions to the organization; or, perhaps, simply send a Valentine’s card in September with a note that you just can’t wait until February to show your love. The key is to keep it fun and uplifting – and make it impossible for your partner to guess who their Secret Pal is. And, of course, the special fun is that while you are the Secret Pal to your lucky partner, someone else in the group is your Secret Pal, and he does fun things for you! At the end of the predetermined period, there is a public event where the Secret Pals are revealed.
