Getting the Most Out of Your Campfire Singing

Campfire music can be spontaneous, on the spur of the moment, or well organized. Some of the best campfire songs are spontaneous as well as planned.

My brothers and sisters and their families would sit around camp after a good day of fishing at Island Park or Henry’s Lake (near West Yellowstone). Brad, my brother, would play his guitar; I’ll play the banjo or the guitar. Mom would ask us to sing “I’ve Been Running on the Train.” Next we will sing “You Are My Sunshine.” Mom likes to sing harmony on those songs. We will end up singing a lot. I can figure out the chords for the accompaniment with most camp songs, so we don’t have to sing.

Having been involved in boy scouts for many years, I have helped organize music for Boy Scout jamborees. They are no more organized than the music of our family.

If you want to have a good experience, I would suggest that you arrange it in advance. Start by asking someone to play the guitar to accompany the group. Pick a few campfire songs and recite them ahead of time. Get them a copy of the song.

For added depth, have multiple people bring their accompaniment instruments such as guitars, banjos, mandolins, and ukuleles. You can use any combination of the tools mentioned above. You can also add a fiddle.

If you choose to use a violin or other melodious instrument, they can play the melody while the band sings. They can also sing alone.

Make sure the players take a few minutes to reconnect with each other. Maybe I’m biased about this, but I’m sure there will be some in the group who would be upset if they weren’t in music.

Engineers will most likely want copies of the music. They may have memorized the songs, or performed them by ear, but that is not possible for most musicians.

What if they can’t read music? If they read tablature, you can get them music in tab form. My site, found in the BIO box below, will have a tablature within the next few weeks that you can download. You can Google the song in the tab and find it that way.

If your singalong will include a large crowd, say 30 or more, you may want to use more than one guitar or other accompanying instrument. You may also want to do this if the group is spread out. The more people you have the more resources you will want to use, so they can hear them.

You can also use electric guitars when accompanying a large group. If so, is there electricity at the site? See if you can find the current forest! You can use a generator, but they are kind of high, and will distract from the campfire. It will probably be better to sing without accompaniment. I would personally recommend that you only use acoustic instruments, and use a bunch. It just doesn’t seem right to me to use an electric guitar out in the great outdoors. But I have to admit that I have done it a couple of times myself. If you do, just be aware of other camps. Many people go camping to get away from it all. If you go camping to get away from it all, make sure you don’t bring it all with you!

Most importantly: enjoy. Don’t take it too seriously and enjoy the journey!
