The Mythology Of The Possum

Most of the smaller complex animals, invertebrates, fish, amphibians, and reptiles can perceive the world along the lines of ‘just eat’ and take whatever comes along – go with the flow. But once you consider the higher complex animals, like birds and animals, then the brain complexity becomes such that to a greater or lesser extent, intelligence and the ability to think and discover the something to note.

Humans may be top of the pop when it comes to smarts and figuring things out, but that doesn’t mean that every non-human life form has the IQ of a microbe. I strongly suspect that birds and mammals develop their own mythology that explains to their satisfaction all that they see and experience every day.

Furthermore, for all kinds of animals that develop a direct or indirect relationship with humans they must also develop a self-narrative that makes sense within their larger worldview that is included in their Big Picture. Those myths, their POV would be very wrong of course, but they don’t know that. They, in all reality, cannot understand the totality of those experiences that they share directly with human activity and therefore to one degree or another they develop a historical worldview that somehow explains what people do within their own environment. . However, sometimes human parts are only indirect and therefore their POV does not actually involve humans in any shape, way or form.

Therefore the purpose of this short essay is to describe those animals (ie – birds and animals) that interact directly or indirectly with humans (in a good, negative, bad or godly way) in stories based on people even if they don’t know about it. Taking a particular animal as an example, consider the following story of the possum.

I have a possum that visits my back yard at night. I know that because I often see its poo; In fact I once saw it silhouetted against the back of a lighted window of a house that faced me. Presumably the possum hadn’t seen me; he is a creature of the night and I am a creature of the day. Now presumably the possum hunts around at night, foraging for food. It’s been a long and bitterly cold Australian winter here in the nation’s capital, Canberra, so, in awe of a fellow life form that’s had a much tougher life than I, I took to leave him an apple early evening. . The next morning, he was gone – the apple he ate. Now I, as an intelligent person, know all the facts of the matter. I bought an apple; I left the apple; The possum found the apple and ate it. However, I can’t help but wonder, from a possum’s perspective, what does he make of the nightly gift of an apple, an apple that appears where there aren’t any apple trees for miles around?

Some assumptions are in order. I think the possum has some intelligence, an IQ, the ability to think and wonder and think. When something out of the ordinary happens, you notice. Meaning, the sun is up and the sun is setting – nothing is for nothing. I doubt if many possums are thinking about the reality of this life. There is a living tree every day – there is nothing much to think about there. It is hot in winter; cold in winter; some days it rains; many days without rain. But the everyday apple wasn’t part and parcel of the world’s visual mythology – until now.

So, something new, interesting but unexpected comes into play. Does the possum put it down to good luck, luck, clean living, being in the right place at the right time, or do you think deeper than that?

Now an apple appears for the first time on the ground and you eat it – unusual but strange things happen. An apple appears on the same spot on the ground every evening – the same spot without the benefit of an apple tree. That is inconsistent with the ordinary expectations and experiences of our possum. Because this is not something natural and ordinary within the world view of the possum, then this has to be something surprising; this is something magical; this is paranormal stuff; this is more than natural. Perhaps there is a supernatural Possum god who cares for possums in times of need, such as in winter when food in general and apples in particular are few and far between.

And so our possum probably developed an idea of something bigger than the natural world he was used to. The possum probably developed a possum myth of a Possum God who takes care of all possums, like himself. It has to be ‘all possums’ since I would think our possum has no understanding of good possums vs.

But maybe you’ve seen me from the privacy of your apple tree, in which case maybe I’m the Great Possum God. If you see other people make gods too, even if they are not super gods?

Since the ever-present apple appears in the same place night after night, can a hungry possum say something different about this piece of (my) lawn(s)? ? Could that patch of land actually, in our possum’s history, become our possum’s sanctuary?

Now the appearance of the possum will not be one based around language and will not be able to communicate its ancient stories to other possums. Instead your perceptions will be based on your five senses, the most important vision in all likelihood. You can imagine, just imagine, some very large (Santa Claus type) possum delivering apples without words for ‘apple’ or ‘possum’ or ‘god’ or ‘gift giver’ or even ‘ person’. It will not have words for land or ‘Holy Earth’, but rather a mental image that this patch of land is very important. Such an image, in contrast to the words we will use, will not come out of the question.

Well, you know and I know that there is no Possum god, nothing mystical or supernatural going on, no Holy World. I know what’s going on – some farmers, hundreds of kilometers away sell their apple seeds to a company that hires a distributor who transports them to Canberra and they end up in local supermarkets of that company. You know that, and I know that, but we can’t expect a possum to know that. If this possum talked to fellow possums (not that he could), he wouldn’t tell a story of a kind man who bought an apple one day and left it to be eaten by possums, much less to know about that distant farmer. , factory, distributor, truck, supermarket, and all the infrastructure that means, etc.

It would be interesting to talk with that possum and find out exactly what the current world mythology is, although that is beyond our means. But, I’ll bet that whatever it is, it’s wrong! However, let us walk a kilometer and try to see things as they may be. How much can we do? I’ve tried to do that, but odds are I’m wrong. There is no real meeting of the minds here. Even if I am face to face with a possum, I cannot speak with it; I can’t be convinced that your POV is wrong.

However, just as each possum has their own unique biographies, so each and every person has a unique perspective on life, the Universe and everything. The difference is that most of the time we can communicate that perspective to others of our species.

The point now is that if there is a companion animal in a flawed POV of their ancient worldview, one that we know is wrong, but they did not, one that may or may not include humanity; Do we humans have a flawless POV turn when it comes to our worldview stories? Similarities between mammals (like our possum) and humans and our collective world view histories may suggest that we too have flawed views about life, the universe and everything that needs to go on and on. research and development. In that broader context, perhaps we can also have a spirit of empathy with material things since we too can be flawed by the myths of the world in the eyes of things that are higher than us.
