Why Healthy Eating Is So Good for Hypermobility Syndrome Sufferers

So, we all know that eating healthy is good for us. We heard it enough. It is what we ‘should do’. But I want to give you a personal take; make it real for you. I want you to know how much of a difference eating healthy has made to me as a Hypermobility Syndrome (HMS) sufferer and I want to give you some tips on how to start feeling this health and energy in life his.

Let’s look at the facts first:

Why eating healthy is better for HMS patients:

When we are healthy on the inside we are healthy on the outside.

Our detoxification organs, including the liver and kidneys, work 24/7 to keep our bodies clean. As we eat more natural food they have to work less. This is great for two reasons: 1 – we look and feel good; 2 – Our detoxification system can then use its time to do internal ‘housework’ to ensure that every part of our body is working the best it can. This means that our joints can stay healthy and recover from injury more quickly.

Eating healthy can satisfy us with fewer calories.

The more healthy we eat the more weight we will drop. That’s great for overall health but also really important for us HMS sufferers.

Fresh food provides us with many vitamins and minerals in a way that processed food cannot.

It is very easy to eat a lot of food yet not have enough nutrition when we eat a lot of processed food. If we enjoy a lot of fruits and vegetables we will make sure that we give quality to our body. Vitamins and minerals are essential to ensure optimal health and function of our joints, organs, bones and muscles.

• Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, especially greens can improve digestion.

It’s all about having the right level of hydrochloric acid in your stomach – see Victoria Boutenko’s writing for details. Having good digestion isn’t just something that means we feel better – it also ensures that we absorb more of the goodness from the food we eat. Double!

Because our bodies are less active, we have more energy.

We look better and we feel better – a great way to make sure we experience life the best way we can at any given moment.

• Because we have more energy and are better, we feel better. I know how easy it is to feel when you have HMS. Feeling brighter every day and happier when we look in the mirror are the two most important things when it comes to feeling better every day.

We have a less rough answer.

There are many, unhealthy, foods that can cause allergies. (You can find out about the most common of these – wheat and dairy – by looking them up or reading authors like Patrick Holford.) Allergies don’t just show up as skin or breathing problems, they also kill. all the rules of the body come up. , along with lowering our overall health and vitality. If we give ourselves a break from these we can function at a more healthy level.

The body is designed for the natural sugar in fruit.

Eating less processed sugar and replacing it with natural sugar puts much less stress on the body. Our plan is not meant to remove processed sugar and cleaning it out of the body day in and day out really takes its toll. Notice how you get more points when you eat a lot of chocolate? Because the skin is an organ of detoxification and if other organs in the body that have accumulated unhealthy nutrients then the toxins will be released through your skin.

Natural water without having to remember to carry a bottle with you everywhere!

Our bodies need water to function properly. Without it, all our vital systems lack oxygen and cannot function properly. It affects our joints, muscles and ligaments too – all those things that we want to keep in the best possible condition. If we eat more fruits and vegetables we will get water in its natural state – packed into some delicious fruits!

Now maybe you ask: “How do you know all this?” Well, that’s because eating healthy has literally changed my life.

I was diagnosed with hypermobility in 2008, but I have suffered for many years; RSI made my academic life hell, low back problems putting me out of action repeatedly while neck and shoulder problems plagued me from a very early age.

2008 was the worst year I’ll ever be. A problem with my neck and shoulder was so bad I had to leave the course I was on. I can’t lift my head for long without muscle strain and severe pain. I spent many months in bed and I was sick.

After a very long, dark period I was finally diagnosed with EDS and had to work with a great therapist.

I decided that I wanted to do everything I could to improve my health. I started researching food, and I was surprised by what I found. I learned about how many foods we take for granted (eg bread, milk, soy) can be highly allergenic. I learned how our body is constantly eliminating, and how, if we put unnatural things in it, you have to really work to get rid of them. I learned how much of the animal products we eat are full of chemicals and hormones that have often been used to treat animals. I learned how natural, raw foods are not only choc full of vitamins and minerals, but also include enzymes which make them easier to digest than processed food. I learned how greens are an amazing food – not only providing minerals in abundance, but also improving the way our bodies eat.

There are many resources, freely available online, written by doctors and enthusiasts, which provide evidence and experience to promote healthy eating.

I decided to become my own tester. It’s easy and cheap – I’d recommend giving it a go! ‘Try’ a healthy diet for a few meals, a few days and see what it does for you. I did that and I never looked back.

I started making adjustments to the way I was eating. I cut out a lot of meat and added more fruits and vegetables. I saw not only that I love you, but I think and look so much healthier. Without trying, I lost weight I never thought I would lose, my skin cleared and my eyes started to glow. I have more energy and sleep better. I get sick with colds and passing bugs much more often. In particular, with therapy, the condition of my joints and muscles improved. They hurt more often and with less intensity, and when I had a setback it was shorter and I healed more quickly.

They sold me to the point that I was working on my food. I eat a diet very high in fresh fruits and vegetables. I do not eat animal products, and I will not cook my food.

You might think this is extreme, but, boy, it works for me! I feel better than I did. I haven’t had a cold in 2 years. I love my body shape. Even better, I love the food I eat. Our taste buds are surprisingly flexible. They adjust to new flavors very easily. For example, once I removed processed sugar from my diet I really started to taste the deliciousness of natural products. Now I can get my sugar kick from apples, oranges, pineapple and mango without guilt!

In particular, my hypermobility has improved immeasurably – I couldn’t get a book two years ago and was in constant pain, now I often walk home from the shops with several shopping bags. I can exercise, engage in most pursuits and live normally. Much of this success is due to my professional physiotherapist and my own determination to get stronger, but I have no doubt that an important part of my recovery is due to my dietary changes.

My improved health and increased energy have increased my self-confidence and overall happiness. I have the courage to be able to start pursuing the things I always wanted – I have more creativity in my everyday life and even I have traveled to another country, something I would like to do when I have a child head!

Who knows what it can do for you?

It’s very easy and fun to ‘healthy’ your diet. How about trying a fruit smoothie? They are easy to make with a regular mixer.

So, if you have mixed get it out of the box. Put it on the work surface in your kitchen. Then there it is, ready to make you have fruit-based smoothies that your body will thank you for all day – loads of vitamins and minerals and natural hydration. If you’re up for it add some greens too – they’ll make it a bad color and you’ll send your mineral selection for the day.

Try this recipe on for size:

• Get two very ripe pears. Quarter them and remove the cores. Then roughly chop them and add them to your blender. Pop the lid on the blender and grind the blades until the pears are liquid.

• Cut a third of a medium cucumber and add it to the pears. Do the same thing with the button pulse from the cucumber juice.

• Take two large handfuls of cash and add them to the mixer. Mix again until the money is mixed and you have a nice smooth liquid.

• Pour all this into a glass and sit back and enjoy the taste!
