Technologically Man is a Giant, Morally a Pygmy
Man’s technology has made great strides. From humble beginnings in the last century with the Industrial Revolution we have come to the stage where we have invented and built many tools that our very existence is threatened by, like the atomic bomb.
It cannot be denied that technology has immeasurably improved the quality of our lives. Travel to anywhere in the world now takes just a few hours by plane, whereas it may have taken years to do so before. We communicate with each other with increased ease and efficiency. All it takes is clicking on a few buttons and we are able to talk to anyone almost anywhere in the world. A television switch gives us news, sports, and entertainment in glorious color. Modern methods of cooking leave no waste behind. For the even more lazy, there are always fast foods, some twenty-four hours a day.
Today’s computers have penetrated into all areas of business, governments and even at home. City traffic is also computer controlled. So it is with many other things where computers are indispensable. Computer hacking also means hacking of any system that controls it. The computer has become almost all-powerful. Such is our reliance on him.
In war, our technology has given us the most effective weapons. Instead of swords and spears, we now have machine guns, heat-seeking soaps, naval weapons, airplanes and instruments of murder and terror. Our power to kill and destroy is terrifying. We have become so powerful that the possibility of destroying ourselves completely is very real.
It is in the light of this possibility of self-destruction that we suddenly find ourselves so vulnerable and in love. While we go about creating millions of things for ourselves to fulfill our desires we have forgotten our basic self. We can make machine guns that fire a thousand rounds a minute but we don’t take responsibility for our creation. So these guns fall into the hands of terrorists and militants. What is the result? Unprecedented death and destruction are now destroying the people of this world. Few are brave enough to rise up to face this struggle. Manufacturers make a profit from weapons. Soldiers use them to destroy themselves, but it is difficult for anyone to stop them.
We let our creatures run riot. In the name of class, faith and religion we plunder each other with the strongest weapons. Innocent people are killed without batting an eyelid. Morally we are no better than dumb animals.
In the short span of the first eighty years of this century, we have had two world wars and countless other wars. Millions have died as a result. Yet the wars continue, endlessly. Some men rose up against this madness but, like many others before them, they were killed, cast aside or simply forgotten. So many of us, including the so-called world leaders today, stay silent and let the violence continue. Some even aggressively perpetuate it.
Manufacturing has brought many benefits. It has also caused environmental disasters. Air pollution, ocean pollution, acid rain and other threats could one day overwhelm our very existence. However some of these polluters are willing to face the truth and do something concrete to end the pollution. They are more interested in making a profit. They don’t want to use their ‘earned’ money to protect the environment. Let someone else do the dirty work. Their kind of responsibility is moral.
In other areas even the crimes committed against ourselves and mother earth. We take land from the ocean, level mountains and blast each other to smithereens. We do not know how to live in peace and harmony with each other. No one wants to be responsible for that. We do not have moral courage. Einstein once said that we have ‘a completeness of means, but a confusion of ends’. We have the power of great miracles, but we do not know how to use such powers.
So we continue in our chaos, commit all kinds of crimes and blame ourselves for them. It’s time we take responsibility for our actions, strengthen our moral courage and make the world a wonderful place to live.
