Stacked Tire Worm Farm

Have you ever thought about what it must be like to be a child sitting in a dusty classroom, trying hard to concentrate, while hunger is always in your stomach. This is a daily reality for many African children, both in remote rural areas and even in the slums surrounding major cities. Jobs are scarce, families are under stress and there is absolutely no money, period! Worst of all, this situation isn’t going to change anytime soon. Maybe not in our lifetime!

Concerned people, both local and public know that international food aid can always go far and often dry up, when it is most needed, as in the current global financial crisis. To survive, communities have to find a way to help each other. Intervention at the local level is needed. One solution to the problem is to promote food gardens in the schools themselves – done jointly by the community, parents, teachers and mostly by the children themselves. Work is free and skills can be learned, but the problem is that what little money you can get must go towards buying tools, seeds and fertilizer. Tools will be inexpensive and can be donated or borrowed. A seed will have to be bought, but in part it can be obtained from the last seed. Fertilizer is often the main problem. In many areas the housing is very poor and will yield little.

This is where worm fertilization can lend a hand. Vermiculture produces a high quality organic fertilizer that can be 20 times higher in nutrients than natural soil and brings trace elements and beneficial minerals to the roots of plants, while improving the disease and moisture retention of poor soils. Plants grown using vermicompost will be fully organic and organic food is healthier than any artificially grown products. Providing fodder for insects is not a problem, there is always organic waste to collect, in the form of animal manure, seed litter, paper or fallen leaves. Of the many types of vermiculture systems available, the stacked tire worm farm, which costs nothing to set up, is the most appropriate solution. We have described the setup and operation of this simple system in detail on our website at http://www.working-worms.com/

In short, all the children need to do, is to collect old discarded tires and put them on a garbage truck, as described in the article, and then start feeding in organic waste from above. Compost worms, naturally, will move upwards towards the food, leaving their residue (worm cast) behind them. The vermicompost is harvested by pulling a small tire from the bottom. The tire is emptied of compost and then it is returned to the top of the stack again and so on. The beauty of this system is that it costs nothing to set up and it can be repeated many times, to create multiple combinations of individual worm farms to any size that is appropriate. All that is required is a small amount of training and a supply of good compost worms – usually eisinia fetida (red wigglers), which can be donated from other schools, already on the program, or from individuals of an issue.

Composting Tire Worm Composting is a viable low-tech solution to a widespread Third World problem. It is a technology that does not require regular financial injections and can be fully operated by the communities themselves. Besides everything, children will have a lot of fun with worm farming and they will learn something useful. Best of all they will do their best to improve themselves, without relying on any manuals. This builds human dignity. “Give a man a fish and you give him today, teach him to fish and he always eats.”

Think about it – maybe there is something you can do to help.
