What Is Bio-Hazardous Waste?

Hazardous waste is any organic residue that is dangerous to human or animal health, such as:

• Human blood and its components, in water or semi-liquid, dried or not dried • Human body fluids (including semen, saliva, cerebral spinal fluid, synovial fluid, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid , peritoneal fluid, amniotic fluid, and it it) ), in liquid or semi-liquid form, dry or not

• human pathological waste: all human organs, tissues, and organs

• animal waste: all flesh and organs

• microbiological waste: laboratory products containing infectious agents (including discarded sample cultures, stocks of etiologic agents, transport and attenuated viruses, waste from the production of scientists and serums, disposable culture dishes, and equipment used to transport, inoculate and mix cultures)

• sharp waste: sharp medical equipment such as needles, needles, glass slides, lancets, glass tubes, broken glass that has been contaminated with potentially infectious material.

To help hospitals and healthcare professionals navigate through the strict legislation on hazardous waste disposal, the Department of Health has created the following classification:

A waste of anger

It is non-hospital waste that is non-infectious and does not contain drugs or chemicals, but it can be unpleasant for anyone who comes into contact with it.

It must separate the hazardous waste of health from both hospital and mixed urban waste.

If you have produced more than 7kg of municipal radioactive products, or in more than one bag at the time of collection, it must be separated from any mixed municipal waste.

If you have produced less, you can dispose of your city’s aggressive waste in the mixed municipal waste (‘black bag’).

Plaster and similar waste

Most products by plaster are not infectious. It should be stored separately from any infected plaster waste, which must be placed in the hospital’s infectious waste stream.

Waste medicine

A drug is considered cytotoxic or cytostatic for classification purposes if it is any of the following:

• acutely toxic

• carcinogenic

• mutagenic

• poison is given for correction

Sharps and related byproducts

Safe management and disposal of waste is important to ensure that the risks associated with waste handling are eliminated and to ensure compliance with the Hazardous Waste Regulations (Scotland’s Hazardous Waste Regulations).

The removal of sharps is determined by drug damage. To ensure compliance with Hazardous Waste Regulations proper segregation and storage of sharps in color coded containers and special containers is essential.

• Lunch boxes – For the storage and disposal of sharps that do not contain or are contaminated with drugs, such as sharps used for blood tests and acupuncture.

• Yellow containers – For storage and disposal of sharps contaminated with or containing drugs or anesthetics.

• Purple boxes-For disposing of sharps and medicines with Cyto-toxic contents or Cyto-static contents or dirt.

• Blue boxes-For disposing of unopened drugs, used drug denaturing agents and discarded items from the handling of drugs such as bottles or containers with residues, gloves, screens masks, connecting tubes, syringe bodies and Anatomical waste drug vials.

Anatomical waste from operating theaters requires special handling and must be stored, transported and disposed of as hazardous waste to ensure that there is no risk to human health or to the environment.

Anatomical waste includes:

• Body parts

• Body parts

• Blood bags and blood treatments

Laboratory chemicals and photochemicals

Hazardous chemical waste—including:

• Waste classified as ‘hazardous’ in the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 amended 2016 (Schedules 1 and 2) or in the European Waste Catalog (EWC) ‘Waste List’.

• Other wastes that exhibit one or more of the hazardous properties (HP1 to HP15) listed in the Standards (see WM3 Environmental Agency Guide).

Any medical supplies or other equipment (such as gloves, towels, used bandages and dressings, tubes) that have been in contact with hazardous materials and thus expose more than the elements traces of these materials themselves are also classified as hazardous waste.

The Environmental Protection Act includes a ‘Responsibility of Care’ which requires everyone involved in waste management, including producers, to take reasonable and appropriate measures to ensure that:

• Waste is only stored, treated, left or disposed of in accordance with the waste management license or other authority;

• Waste does not escape the control of the holder;

• Waste is only transported to authorized persons such as registered waste haulers or landfill services authorized to collect such waste;

All shipments/shipments of the waste are accompanied by an accurate written description of the waste which will allow the waste to be identified and then handled appropriately.
