Are you movie crazy? No, I don’t mean crazy for a Harold Lloyd joke Movie Crazy from 1932 by a young man with little or no acting ability, desperately trying to be in the movies. I mean, are you crazy about movie time? I must admit I am a cracker for movies. So, all those who consider themselves film freaks raise your hand. Yes, that’s almost everyone. Why are we so movie crazy? Why do we live in a movie crazed society? Hey, what are movies anyway?
Cinema is ideas and/or stories brought to the audience through emotion through sound and a series of non-visual images. Thanks to Google Search.
How popular are movies? Well, the keyword “movies” raises one that triggers 1.1 billion and growing number on Google search engine alone. And the keyword “movie trailers” has accumulated 127 million plus searches. Watching movie trailers on the internet has become a popular past time for many. I know my husband is one of them. He loves watching your movie trailers.
This past year alone has brought in an incredible box office revenue of 29.2 billion dollars worldwide for 2009. Movies are watched and produced worldwide. The language gap has been dissolved due to the addition of subtitles. Now we can all share in the world movie experience. As well as being universal, movies are made for everyone young and old. Why can’t you even see visions in most Disney or children’s movie shows. There is something there for everyone regardless of your age.
We celebrate movies and we celebrate the stars in our movies. We bring them into our home through TV shows dedicated to stars like ET, ET Canada, Access Hollywood and TMZ to name a few. We get supermarket tabloids like The National Enquirer and the Star checking out the latest celebrity gossip and tossing them into our shopping carts when no one else is.
We have the Oscars as we do the Superbowl and even bet or at least announce our opinion on the winners of the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, MTV Awards, etc. Then there are classic TV shows like ‘Lives of the Rich and Famous’ that we are literally oohing and aahing over the content as it is good wine. The show ran for 10 years (March 1984 – September 1995). What we destroy! What a concept! We have to truly mark and fall upon the amazing homes, lifestyles and dream vacation spots of the stars. Today, you can watch shows like MTV’s ‘the beds’ and VH1’sFabulous Life….’
If you are more of a homebody you don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home to watch a movie. You can stream movies directly through the cable of your TV or on major movie channels like Thrill, The Movie Network, HBO, Movie Central, Showtime, Turner Classic Movies, etc. And that’s after you’ve clicked through TV movies of week, record movies on your PVR or send your kids to the video store to rent one of this week’s new releases. Oh, and not to mention you can buy movies from your brick and mortar video store down the street or even online on eBay or Amazon.
How do we get our golden tickets to these great palaces? We buy cereal boxes and cut up cardboard receipts, we use our air miles or exchange points to convert money into movie tickets. We fill out contest forms in hopes of being chosen as the lucky few to attend previews of our favorite movies before they even hit theaters. We also line red carpets around the world and tune into celebrity interviews on our favorite daytime and nighttime shows like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman, Oprah and Regis & Kelly.
What beat the movie experience? There is nothing. We reserve our tickets, buy our favorite treats, get the latest celebrity or tribute magazine for a light reading before our movie (while eating real buttered popcorn or a bag of beer). The lights dimmed, the screen widened and the image and sound came on simultaneously. We look forward to movie previews while watching doomsday announcements and then they come. The big beautiful ones bring the attractions in all their glory. We whisper yes or nays or give thumbs up to our friends sitting next to us for the next movie adventure we’ll be planning. Then if we’re lucky, that is, people will get to hear the roar of the THX sound effect reverberating around the theater. (Hey, guys you can listen to it on YouTube or download it as a free mp3 or ringtone). Then the wait is over. Rat! And the adventure begins…
Again, why are we so movie crazy? Is it because cinema is cheap; a cheap day; or the family’s economic exit. Is it that the meeting could be more enhanced by an Imax or 3-D experience. Or is it deeper. A chance to escape the real world if only for a few hours. Movies evoke emotion whether it is joy, laughter, fear, sadness, inspiration, faith, love, etc. Whether you are on an unpredictable adventure, depicting a mystery or watching a family with loss. Film takes us away; wherever we want to go. Even the theater itself is an experience as discovered. The lights, sound, feeling, big screen, comfy oversized fabric seats, simple cup holders, popcorn and munchies from the snack stand, etc. The movie experience really touches on all of our senses. What movies have inspired you recently?
Movies are a place where you can choose what you want to see and feel. If I want to be happy I will go see a light comedy. If I want to be happy I will go see a thriller or horror. And if I want to play my little nephew and niece I will go see the latest animation movie, etc. Then there are the rest of the genres that fill the movie experience: action and adventure, crime and gangster, drama, epics/ history, musical / dance, science fiction, war, documentary, westerns, biopics, chick-flicks, detective and mystery, tragedy, fantasy, film noir, guy films, melodramas / laments, road films, romance, sport, supernatural , and so on.
Cinema brings people together. They are something to talk about at the watering hole at your 9 to 5 job, chat among your Facebook friends or discuss in forums. We can talk about the worst movies we’ve ever seen or our all-time favorites. We can ask each other on movie trivia, quotes and songs. We can read or write reviews on movies, watch movie ratings and buy books on movies. We can even get the latest Hollywood gossip delivered to our email inboxes or go online to check out blogs like Leonard Maltin’s Crazy Movie blog.
Is there another benefit from movies other than the whole entertainment experience? Indeed, there is. Many professional therapists are using movies to help people in crisis. There is a healing effort using—you guessed it—films. It’s called Cinema Therapy. We use cinema treatment because it is readily available (there is a movie theater in most cities) and the subject matter of many films is familiar to everyone. It also increases the rapport between the client and the therapist. Who doesn’t want to talk movies.
Other benefits include the release of emotions such as when we laugh during a joke our laughter releases stress, tension and/or pain. The tear vessel that makes us cry releases the emotions that we hold up/blocked. How about movies that are about relationships or parents. Observations and/or lessons can bring us closer to people, make us analyze our current situations/relationships or make us realize that we have work to do.
And if there’s one last thing that fuels our movie-crazy mentality it’s our desire or longing to actually be in a movie and/or meet a movie star. Well, this one in — you can do both. Have you heard of the TV talk or the movie supplement? If you want the best bird’s eye view of the making of a movie and to meet a movie star or two signs to be extra. You’ll get paid, eat, be on set and maybe bump elbows with your favorite movie star.
