16 Essential Oils For Your Dog
Essential oils are able to produce the desired result faster than herbs. A drop of peppermint oil is equal to 26 cups of peppermint tea. Essential oils have multiple effects where many drugs often have only one medical property with negative side effects.
Using essential oils on their skin is not recommended by some health care professionals. Pets lick their feet and this can cause possible irritation as saliva is similar to water. Essential oils penetrate the skin quickly. Compounds such as fertilizers, pesticides and other toxins can be absorbed more quickly when essential oils are applied to their roots.
I have taken advice from Dr. Nancy Brandt, DVM and applied the knowledge in my dog breeding business. She is a general veterinarian based in Las Vegas, NV and uses Young Living essential oils in her practice. Most essential oils should be diluted with a base or carrier oil before using on your pet. For dogs, the recommendation is 1 drop of essential oil to 10 drops of base/carrier oil and for cats, rabbits and ferrets, 1 drop of essential oil to 25 drops of base/carrier oil. You can listen to Dr. Brandt’s lecture 1/29/2009 on the internet discussing 16 Young Living essential oils that a pet owner should have on hand.
In my opinion the best base or carrier oil is organic extra virgin olive oil, grapeseed oil or fractionated coconut oil. Avoid nut oils if your pet is allergic to nuts. I recommend using V-6 Complex Vegetable Oil by Young Living as a base/carrier oil. The ingredients of V-6 are Fractionated Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Helianthus ( Sunflower) Seed Oil, and Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil. Cold pressed olive and grapeseed oil are other options to use as a base/carrier oil.
Oil and water do not mix; Water causes oil to irritate your pet’s skin. If the pet is sensitive to any essential oil, dilute the oil with a base/carrier oil or add more base/carrier oil to where the essential oil is applied. If any essential oils get into your pet’s eyes rinse with a base/carrier oil, do not water.
I chose essential oils made by Young. They are taking the grade and making the right progress. They are organic and do not contain toxins, such as pesticides. Not all essential oils can be taken internally. Young’s essential oils are one of the few essential oils that can be safely taken internally. There are 42 species of spices but Young Life chose the 2 species with the most therapeutic benefits and are not the cheapest to make and process. The oil is processed with low heat by steam distillation or cold pressing. This makes more of the natural resources available. Some essential oil brands process their products with high heat and as a result their essential oils do not have all the properties plus may contain toxins. They cost less and are not effective.
Balsam fir essential oil (Idaho) is anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant (stops blood from clotting) and acts like cortisone. It is used for respiratory issues and pain. For breathing anchor like them on the chest. For painful issues, rub on the source. I spread out into my cabin if I see or hear any signs of a cold or cough. You can mix 2-3 essential oils together and diffuse them to get the desired results.
Eucalyptus Radiata can be used as a smelling salt and helps open the lungs when there is an upper respiratory infection. Its medical properties are antibacterial, antiviral, expectorant and anti-inflammatory. Like salt the smell of the bottle is briefly under the nose. For breathing issues, like them on the chest. I use eucalyptus on my dogs collars and it works as an insect repellant. I put eucalyptus on my basic ball cap while fishing and the bugs left me alone.
Spices can cross the blood/brain barrier and help in increasing oxygen to the brain. Spices are used for infections and tumors, dissolves tumors & wounds. Frankincense is antibacterial, antiviral, expectorant and anti-inflammatory. It can be used topically, diffused, or simply inhaled. I have used the spice on the clots on my pets and the size of the clot has decreased quickly.
Helichysum is great for wounds or bleeding. I use it when we remove the dew chips or stop the tail. It speeds up the healing process. This essential oil is not washed but applied directly on the bare stomach, making sure to avoid the sexual organs. Apply 1 drop per 1 inch of bare belly up the center of the pet’s belly. Helichrysum medical properties are anticoagulant, anesthetic, antispasmodic, antiviral, liver detoxifier; chelates chemicals and toxins plus regenerates muscles. Choose Helichysum if rat poison is suspected. This will help control internal bleeding while you go to your vet.
Lavender is a universal essential oil and can be used for anything. This essential oil is used sparingly (not diluted). Lavender is great for healing burns and sunburns. Lavender has great calming effects. Here is a recipe that can be misted into the air: leave 2 to 1 oz. of steamed distilled water put in a spray bottle, shake before each use. Its medical properties are antibacterial, antifungal, antitumoral, anticonvulsant, vasodilating, relaxant, anti-inflammatory, reduces blood fat/cholesterol, and combats excess fat on the skin. I use lavender to clean tear stains off my puppies while they are laying eggs. Apply once a day, put one on your finger and rub it across the nose and under the eyes (avoid the eyes). I like to use it at night since lavender has calming properties.
Peppermint is wonderful for treating diarrhea and vomiting. Be sure to dilute with a base/carrier oil formula. The medical properties of Peppermint are anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, antiparasitic (worms), antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, gallbladder/digestive stimulant, and pain reliever and help to suppress appetite. I use peppermint diluted and rubbed on the gums or stomach to stop diarrhea.
Pine works for respiratory issues and works even better when mixed with eucalyptus. This is a great combination to spread during the winter months and great sunshine. Or you can do a lunge on the chest between the front legs. The medical properties of pine are hormone-like, antidiabetic, cortisone-like, antiseptic and lymphatic stimulant.
Essential oil blends are a combination of several essential oils that have a broad spectrum of beneficial medical properties. Di-Gize helps with controlling diarrhea and vomiting. It works better than peppermint. Put the oil on the bare stomach and rub it in a clockwise motion, in the direction the colon moves. Egyptian gold helps the immune system and is used for open wounds (dog/cat fights). It is applied to the chest and between the shoulder blades on the back. Joy helps the heart and circulatory system. Apply to the chest and side of the ribs. GLF should be used if your pet has access to anything toxic such as fertilizer or advice. Like them on the liver. The liver is below the ribs on the right side. Melrose is great for chronic infections like abscesses (sores) that are difficult to heal. Panaway is for dog bites, wounds, cuts and scrapes. Puricuration is used arbitrarily on insect bites. It cleans the air and kills the virus, Parvo. It balances the electrostatic forces. Use it on your pet’s bed as a cleaner. Mix 1 drop to 1 oz of steam distilled water in a spray bottle. Shake before use and spray the room, bed, and toys anything your pet touches to disinfect. I highly recommend this to my clients if they are considering getting their pets vaccinated to keep their pets germ free. Thieves kills bacteria and can be used as a natural medicine. You should use cleaners for cleaning your pet’s teeth. This is a healthier option then taking your pet to the vet to have his teeth cleaned. Apply a drop to your finger and rub it on your pet’s upper eyelids once a week or daily if you notice issues. We advise thieves not to use on cats because of their sensitivity to their liver. Valor is chiropractic in a bottle. It balances the body by balancing the energy centers (chakras). Apply to the spine. This is a wonderful essential oil blend for pets that lead active lifestyles such as hunting or testing.
