Types of Leather Used to Make Shoes and Boots
Traditionally, leather is the preferred material of choice for shoes or boots and has been so for thousands of years, with the first known leather shoe dating back an astonishing six years. To this day, many top shoe brands continue to follow our ancestors who use the wisdom of leather as it offers many qualities, which are often left in other materials.
- Shoe form can always be easily maintained in leather form while still having the ability to take small adjustments in order to accommodate the specific shape of one’s feet.
- Leather’s properties allow it to absorb and disperse heat away from the feet.
- Leather can often be repaired by polishing as it has a good surface abrasion.
- It is a comfortable material that can be worn in both hot and cold weather.
- It flexes easily with the foot, and doesn’t strain too much with reading or eating.
The skin of many animals can be treated in ways such as plating and can be found in the following different types of skin:
- French beef – these calves are normally aged up to 10 months, providing a premium quality leather that is of a strong nature. Therefore, this leather is used as the top material in many high quality men’s and women’s boots. This color will always be in line.
- Year – this leather comes from the skin of an adult animal, up to 2 years old. The grain is courser than in the calf, but in the sea. This color can be found in men’s, women’s and children’s shoes and as a clothing color is always lined.
- Bring up – made from the skin of a full grown adult. Again, this skin is even more flexible than a yearling calf but is much stronger and stronger. It is commonly referred to as ‘a side of leather’ because of its cut from the back for easy handling. This leather is best for work boots and sturdy shoes. Because of its strength, these skins are too thick for the use of shoe tops and are divided into layers. The outer layer (hair layer) is used for the tops and if this outer layer is damaged or damaged in any way, the surface can be left to remove the imperfections before go. The leather is then known as ‘modified grain’ leather. Boots made with hide/ox-hide/willow leather are made as unlined boots due to the thickness of the leather.
- Goat or Kid – This type of leather is much softer than calfskin, but in the same instance it is more likely to flow and be subject to wear and tear. Baby leather, obtained from small animals, is finer in grain and has a glossy appearance. Both Goat and Kid leather are used in men’s and women’s fashion and comfort shoes and are especially popular in good quality moccasins. In either of its forms, be it Kid or Goat, this leather has very different seeds, which are located around the follicles. For example, RMWilliams uses kid’s leather only for shoe covers and heel socks and is recognized by its distinctive buttery yellow color.
- Kangaroo – This is a lightweight soft leather, which is both soft and comfortable to wear. It is also surprisingly strong for its weight and is often seen in both fashion and sports shoes, as well as in dress and casual boots. This color is always a line.
- Buffalo – this leather has a nice design and a unique surface; coming from water buffalo. When we use it for shoes, most of the buffalo leather will come from young animals and we usually use it in casual shoes and dress and sometimes for clothes.
- Camel – a naturally heavy finished leather that is both tough and robust. This color comes from Australian camels that are either farmed or wild, a product found in Central Australia. One of its distinguishing features is found in the healed scars that arise from desert life. Again, this leather can be used for both clothing and work shoes.
- Pigskin – makes for the best textile material as it is a soft, loose fiber. Often appearing in pairs, the follicle pores are deep and widely spaced. Sometimes it is possible for the grain side of the skin to be stretched to produce a pork shoulder.
- Sheepskin – other soft and loose leather. This type of color is not as strong as others and for that reason it is often used with intact wool as a color for slippers or cold weather shoes.
- Deerskin – is often used in high-end footwear for men’s and women’s boots and shoes. This leather is hard wearing, soft and very comfortable to wear and has a slight surface texture.
- Abnormal skin – other creatures, such as lizards, snakes, crocodiles and crocodiles, have skin that can be tanned for shoes and boots or as decorative panels and trims for other shoes. As they have a very different appearance and are difficult to work with, these leathers are expensive and require a strong material.
