A Brief History of Custom Printed T-Shirts

Screen printing has been used to produce printed T-shirts and clothing for nearly two thousand years. This technique was developed in China where they stretched human hair over a tree to create the original veil. Then they attach a pattern of leaves or grass to create different shapes.

This technique was soon adopted by the Japanese who added silk to the paintings. Woven silk and woven fabrics gave artisans the ability to create sophisticated designs. Steps made of silk mesh became so popular that they were later called silk printing.

This method was patented in 1907 by a printer named Samuel Simon. The Industrial Revolution made it profitable to produce printed T-shirts on a large scale. But the design was still considered pedestrian.

It wasn’t until the First World War that a manufacturer introduced a new technique that would change the face of the industry forever. John Pilsworth, a printer from San Francisco, developed the famous Selectasine process, which allowed multiple types of printing in the same window. This method was immediately accepted as a cost-effective and reliable way to print multi-color signs and banners using the same screen. Where are we now?

Making custom printed T-shirts still depends on the screen, but the tools have changed a bit. First they used hair, then silk, now they use polymers. The main difference is the fabric’s complexity and the ease with which it can be washed. Polymer meshes are easy to clean and are more durable than traditional materials.

Even in the age of computers screen printers must have the same equipment. Initially, all machines must have a screen or pen to transfer the image or design onto the printed T-shirts. The printer should also have a squeegee and some type of ink.

The process is as simple as it gets. The printer uses a squeegee to apply ink to the screen and then prints directly onto the custom printed T-shirts. The garment needs several hours to dry before shipping or wearing.

What to use? Cotton, polyester, silk, or paper can all be printed on. Posters, t-shirts, flyers, posters, or signs can all be created using a printing press. In short, any surface that can be stretched and can absorb ink is a suitable material for screen printing.
